Back in my (very poor & dumb) youth I did use a pair of those ancient metal milk crates as jack stands, surprisingly strong... :anonymous:

I'm back to being alone in the shop for a little bit, my coworkers brother found out he had cancer a couple months ago. They called hospice in Sunday and he just got a phone call saying it won't be long.

Customer just came in with an odd request......knurl a flat surface on steel. They actually call it checkering from what I found. Boss sent me a video of a guy using a cutter with all the inserts removed but 1 with fast travel.

    Challenge accepted.

I made this 20ish years ago and tried it in the mill on a piece of brass, it did not work.

A day or two ago someone mentioned what are Cheetos made of, @Kilo Charlie maybe? While that still remains a mystery and one of the great questions for the oracle, if you guys haven’t tried these you need to!

In other news, my garage door opener just made an awful sound, popped and smoked the motor. I think I know what my handyman project of the afternoon is.

Anybody have comments on a belt drive garage door opener? They seem to be the latest technology.

I've had a belt drive door opener on my custom 18×8 foot door since 2005 and it's never given me an issue (knock on wood now) but I did have to replace my springs a couple years ago.

Springs are no joke and best left to the professionals. I'd check your springs and see if they were the cause of the opener failure.

Flat knurl went good. Ground a carbide insert to a point and ran it 400 rpm, 40 ipm, .015” deep. Went over it three times with a 1/2” offset each time.

It’s a backing plate for a door striker, it’ll never be seen.

I don’t mess with the springs! Saw a torsion spring get loose one time, scary!

I did check the spring by opening the door by hand after the motor blew. Door goes up and down freely and the spring seems to be working like it’s supposed to. The door was replaced about 10 years ago to bring it up to new hurricane codes and a new spring was installed then. I haven’t had it serviced since then so I will be calling a garage door place to come check it out.
