Trying to decide on a tonneau cover

Not too familiar with brands or what a good price for one would be. Was also looking at their soft one too. If anyone has any recommendations on something better that would be great.

 

That's a good price - and it's both flush and folds out of the way.

There are many others that cost more and are less usable. Looks like a great option.

Don't pay attention to the price, you can do better. The Bakflip lets you keep the OEM bed rails (relocates them a couple of inches lower) and also allows you to access the entire bed without removing the cover.

 

My experience with the Bakflip MX4 tonneau has been positive. I have had mine for 4½ years and it has been reliable. It does leak a bit but then I just installed it as is on a cold January day and never tried to fix any small leaks. They just go down the side and under the mat anyways...

 

I am struggling with the same issue as to which cover to get. I am really leaning toward the Lomax Stance. I really need to make up my mind soon because you can't leave anything in your bed with out it getting stolen. The Lomax looks to better built but its a few hundred extra bones for it.

 

For a cover you can completely remove in 60 seconds and put back on in less than 5 minutes, the Extang Solid-Fold 2.0 works well.

I have to completely pull mine for hauling brush (I have too many trees) and it's a snap to take off and put back on. Very secure.

 

Lomax all the way for 3 years and still going strong. Can take it off for full use of the bed in under a minute put it back on in 2 minutes. Plus had the shit beat out of my truck with hail about $8000 but the Lomax only has a few slight dents can’t even really notice them. Plus there is a dealer on here get you a great price on a Lomax or Bakflip best 2 to pick from.

 

I have a lomax that I just removed for a Retrax Pro. Pros and cons to each, the Lomax was SO clean, looked fantastic because it was so low profile. Functioned well, zero issues. I bought the Retrax XR Pro for the t-slot rails. It was damned expensive but I like it a lot too. Lomax: you could remove it and have 99.9% of your bedspace but flipped up, you were still down a ⅓. Retrospect: if you don't need the t-slots, consider the bakflip.

Love(d) my Lomax though.

 

I feel like the two most popular are Lomax and Bakflip MX4

Looking at the RC tonneau install video, I have some comments on the design:

• Front panel cannot open like the Extang Encore. Though I'm not aware of any other trifold cover that could.
• It cannot fold up against the cab like the Bak Flip and Undercover Flex. To expose the whole bed for larger objects, you'd have to crawl under the tonneau, loosen the thumbscrews, and remove the tonneau (but leave the rails in place).
• It relies on just the two thumbscrew clamps on the frontmost panel for location. If you go off-road, the extra vibration and bed flex will likely cause the tonneau to shift out of position. I had this issue with an Extang SolidFold (which was also sold as a Toyota genuine accessory in some markets).
• It has slam latches (as opposed to clamps) on the rearmost panel like several other tonneaus on the market. Convenient in daily use, esp. in the dark, but can pop open in more severe off-road use, due to bed flex.

 

I had this cover before my camper shell (although it was branded as “Rugged” but same exact product), and it was a great, simple hard cover that is more waterproof than most becasue it isn’t flush with the bed sides. It’s sits on top, but still pretty low profile…

MX4 hands down. It’s probably the most expensive but it’s the best.

I had a bakflip on my 2nd gen and went with the bakflip on my 3rd gen and the quality is by far the best. It relocates the bed rails, the finish is high end, even the rubber lining is top quality. There’s a reason it’s the most expensive.

All the other tonneau covers have serious flaws ( not allowing full use of bed, poor quality, way too heavy, etc).

Spend the grand. It only hurts once.

 

Disagree with the above post. Lomax is a great Tonneau cover, quality, faster to remove without tools than any other cover I researched (about a minute) and you have full use of the bed then without blocking the rear window view and you don’t have to relocate the bed rails.

Stay far away from the Bakflip mx4! I bought mine when I got my truck a year ago. I’m on my third set of rails and my third cover. It leaks so much that I told them I could just tape $1000 together and it would keep out just as much water is their cover! You can’t put anything back there that you don’t want to be wet unless it doesn’t rain. Good luck

 

It doesn’t allow full bed use. Looking at the install video, the last panel next to the cab doesn’t fold away. Am I missing something?

 

I got an offbrand off Amazon for $227... I'm a cheapster but this thing has held up. I don't see the need in spending $700-1200 for no reason (hard cover would be better security but meh). It keeps my stuff dry, easy to remove and put back on.
