LMFAO... Funny, neither of them actually broke on the shaft.

Let's ask @theesotericone about how ADD CVs hold up on Thompson Hill - Dusy/Ershim

Jen and I are having serious discussions about what this winter's list will look like.

Dual cases is on it, for sure, and wife approved
Solo Motorsports, full LT conversion as well as a rear axle is on the table and close to being approved.

That would put me with RCV hybrid CVs with manual Dana 44 hubs.

No, a friend of mine has dual cases with triple sticks in a standard cab he's going to part out. The dual cases are mine as soon as I want them.

Tried to get my AC charged up at a shop because I couldn't find a local parts store that had a loaner vacuum pump (WTF). They vacuum tested the system and it wouldn't hold. They pressurized the system with some dyed R134 to find the leak, and tracked it to somewhere in the evaporator box. "They don't take apart dashes anymore", which is fine with me. Just the work they did cost me $225.

I got it home and ripped it apart in about 10 minutes. All that to find out one of the O-rings on the expansion valve literally fell out of the union.

The R134 also ruined all the duct seals it touched.

    :jerkoff:

This guy's on my wavelength at the moment.

Looking for suggestions to a "problem" (or eventual problem).

My front skid plate - like many - attaches at the front crossmember and at the little LCA tabs. I've had to drill and re-tap all four of those captured nuts over the years (all of them are currently at 3/8-16), and now one of them is loose again. Obviously I can't redrill these forever, since the captured nuts only have so much meat to them.

What's the best course of action here? Try to weld the nut solid and redrill/tap again? Some sort of insert? Welding was my first thought, but seems like I'd have a hard time getting up into the nut and a hard time cleaning it out in the first place to get a good weld. Really I'd like to weld a grade 8 nut up in there, but I've already welded the tabs on in a way that makes that ... difficult.

What's the deal with Marlin? Just curious.

You cut the boots and remove the axle. If I needed to replace the axle, that would have sucked.

What broke on your manual hub axle?

I don't have an impact that large. Borrowing the Milwaukee 3/4" drive from work today though.

I think your on the right path here. I would recommend drilling out those holes to 3/4" roughly.
Then upgrade to 7/16 or 1/2 Grade 8 nuts and weld them up into the newly drilled holes. You'll gain strength in mounting and strength in the bolt itself holding the skids.

I have a piece of 3/16 to replace the thin oem piece. I just drilled a hole and dropped a bolt in from the top.

Mine were already missing, so I took a piece of 3/16 flat bar and tac'd a nut on the backside and welded them onto the same spot.

ADD is stronger. RCV's are stronger still but they only make them for ADD. lol

My Dusy CV issues where caused by a severely bent passenger diff arm. That pulled the diff up on that side. So when I drooped out I was drooping way past the bind point for these rigs. Snapping 4 CVs on one trail was super rare. As soon as I got the rig in the garage the issue became pretty obvious. lol

Coat the bolt with shoe polish wax for a release agent. Alcohol the nut to degrease. Devcon, jb weld or acra glass the waxed bolt and install it to reform threads. Just an idea since it's only one nut loose. No, I haven't done this on my tacoma but I've bedded some rifles and fixed some other stuff similarly.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
The bearings blew up inside the outer joint on one side. We just pulled the shaft out. The other one, I haven't looked at it yet, to know for sure, but it was making ugly noises till I unlocked that hub lol. The shaft is still there though.
