    Hey folks,

Went away for three and a half weeks and came back to CEL and TC lights and truck is rough idling and won’t stay running. Bout to be riding my bike to get a new gas cap to see if that helps. Also gonna buy a scanner to see what it actually says.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I park on an incline and did top off but not more than the one click before I left. Not sure if that has something to do with it. Thanks in advance to any and all guidance.

Rough idiling and wont run is not going to be fixed by a gas cap.

Get a code reader and it will tell you what you need to know. Im going to bet some rodent decided to snack on wiring harness, where that is no one knows until you get a code reader.

Sounds like a mouse has been chewing on a couple wires. Have you looked under the hood?

So i took a peek and haven’t seen any indication of rodents but will get under there with a light. I did however found codes:

    P0102
    P0051
    P0037
    P0031
    P0102
    P0057

It seems like a multitude of things…gonna go underneath next. This blows, i gotta work tomorrow

Thanks for the guidance so far, gonna go hunting for varmint.

Looks like those are mostly o2 sensor heater circuit issues.

The one that is likely causing rough / non running is the maf code, start at the maf sensor connector an start following it back! im betting some rodent chomping around the point in the harness that the o2 sensor heater wires are near by haha.

OK I have some really good news. I found a loose fuse, apparently whoever installed the lights tapped into the EFI number two and it was loose as I had removed the fuel pump relay while I was away as a last resort if someone tried to take the truck.

lights are gone but still rough idle. Finna go around the parking lot.

thank you again to all the guidance. Just when i feel bummed, this community comes through.

Alcohol in fuel absorbs water from air, and in fuel tanks. Gasoline hates water. When the Alcohol has enough water absorbed in it, it does what is refered to as phase seperation. The Alcohol water mix drops out of solution and the gasoline floats on top. 3 weeks of no motion is plenty of time for this to happen. Oddly enough sometimes adding HEAT fuel drier ( Alcohol) will work get the water/alcohol mix dissolved back into the gasoline.

    Seafoam helps too.

If you can get it moving with those two things in the fuel, hard braking will get it sloshing around and mixed back up.

It also causes terrible computer confusion.

This is real critical information I didn’t consider. I’ll know now to add stabil while away.

Good ole toyota and simple fixes! (And good for you for pre-emptive theft deterrents)

FYI if you are going to let fuel sit for a chunk of time like mentioned above some stabilizer helps. Check out startron enzyme fuel treatment, been using it for quite some time with great results with our lovely shitty CA E10 gas.

That plus it wouldn't hurt to add some super unleaded before you park it.

Wasn't planned, I had filled my tank last year and 2 days later realized I was going to be without my truck for several months. I threw some Stabil or Startron in (forget which but I've had great success with both on my small engine fleet) and when I got it back I ran it down about 5 gallons from full and topped off with super (93). It was driving fine, but cheap insurance as the fuel sat for 3 months and a few days

From what I understand, our wonderful federal government who is benevolent, kind, wise, and never ever ever ever would do anything that could possibly harm any of us, mandated up to E15 across the country with a waiver of reporting requirements to consumers. I am certain that it was in best interests.

In fuel testing, there are reports of some fuels having up to e20. I am sure they are lies though because that would cost millions of dollars in repair bills.

Move to E15 would render LOTS of cars efffed.

Don't put seafoam in your gas tank. It's not a 1985 Iroq Camaro

Water in fuel isn't going to cause a problem in the 02 heater circuit. That's a faulty sensor or open/shorted circuit (the fuse falling out opens the circuit)

Try cleaning the throttle body for the rough idle.
If you're concerned about stagnant fuel add some premium and drive on the highway

Hey Rafael, what did you do to fix it.

O2 sensor heater circuits won't effect running at all, and I would never think seafoam would do anything for that.

It does seem to help clean things downstream of injection in my experience.

Stagnant fuel is different than phase separated fuel.

It really is a subject worth studying on. It is a horrible problem for us at work, we have literally 100s of small honda engines, and machines that cycle usage thru spring, summer, fall, and winter.
Customers leave fuel jugs open to rain and condensation in the back of open pickup beds, then fill our machines with fuel primed to seperate.

A shop added lights a few years back that tapped into a fuse that got loose when I went to put back the EFI fuel relay.

easy fix. Now I need to rewire and set up an auxiliary fuse box to avoid this in the future
