Hi Guys. I've always wondered how this applies to any vehicle, but I've also really not had this happen previously either...

SO....yesterday I'm driving....something distracts my attention briefly, and then suddenly the pre-collision warning system starts rapidly beeping at me. I snap out of it and slam on the brakes HARD.....the tires lock and I skid across the pavement quite a ways, but fortunately, don't collide with anyone or anything. Phew!

My question is: Is is likely that the super hard braking and vehicle skidding caused any damage to my Tacoma (2022 SR V6 4x4)? I realize that it is likely wear and tear on the brake pads/rotors and tires, but is the rest of the vehicle good, or is this a situation where I should be taking it to a dealer service dept ASAP to have it checked out?

Kinda a newbie here and don't know a ton about trucks or cars, so I appreciate your advice. :)

You should be fine, it’s happens to everyone a time or two. Not that you should have anything to be concerned about but for the next few days, from time to time, drive without the radio on and just get a feel for how she rides, breaks, sounds…., if you’re paying attention you’ll know if something is off.

How fast were you going? what caused the Precollision system to go off? Or did it just go off with nothing around? Did the tires lock up or did ABS kick in?

Do the usual checks, ie drive a straight quiet road, make sure no ones behind you. Loosely grip the steering wheel and apply the brakes, look out for any steering wheel pull or shuddering.

Measure the tread depth of each tire, check again in 4-6 months and see if any tires are wearing unevenly. Make sure the tires are in good shape to, no cracks/bulges/flat spots etc.

We used to do emergency stops all the time for ambulance training, and the vehicles (mercedes sprinter van chassis with a box on the back) were absolutely fine with it.

I no-kidding launched a Suzuki samurai off a tree root over a 35’ cliff going 65 mph when I was younger with the song Butterfly in the background.

drove home that night going 20 the entire way. Took it to my shop teacher the next day (high school) asked him to check my car out.. he asked what was wrong, told him nottthing…. Just please look at it and tell me if anything seems off.. thing was perfectly fine, drove it for another 10 years until the body corroded in on itself :D

pretty sure your truck is fine bro, nice reaction!

OP, do you go outside at all? I bet you were on your phone weren't you?

I can see why anxiety is rampant among your people these days.

    So much judgment here....

You're fine dude. It worked as designed. One little panic stop will not hurt your brand new truck, just your ego might be a little bruised. Doing that all the time i.e. being an aggressive driver will probably wear out the brakes faster than they normally should but besides that... you're good.
