We were up there August 6-7 and it is still first come, cash only, $15/night. There were signs saying it is changing to online reservations, but not sure when that's going to happen. Probably next season. I personally like the first come system up there because reservations are just going to cause conflict and there is no cell service at the lake (you can get a couple bars on Grassy and Potato Patch Mtn). First come makes it easy to watch the nice spots and move camp if a better one opens up.

One of the regular CG hosts (Tim) is pretty good about bringing a load of split wood. He said he would be back in Sept., so check beside the host cabin to see if there's a wood pile before you try to cut your own wood. You need USFS certification (AKA "fire card") to run a power saw in a CG or on marked trails.

awesome! Yea last time we went to GA traverse we rode from SC side back west towards loop and a couple of those campgrounds inside the forests were reservation which threw us for a loop.. We actually ended up having to move because someone showed up with a reservation.

I don't recall any. I don't even remember if the fire pits had a fold over grate.

Any wheeling in the surrounding areas? Not too familiar with GA trails anymore as all of the ones I remember are closed. But I'm planning to head up Friday afternoon if anybody else wants to join up early

https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/conf/recarea/?recid=10533 looks like temporarily closed to allow trails to dry could be open by the time of trip.
