    The best thing you can do is to be yourself. You know, the guy who Jim considered a friend. It may not be easy, but you can do it for him and for you.

    Not quite that simple unfortunately. I do have a couple of friends in PA though..

    Oh yikes sorry man.

    Starting in 1995 or 1996 (I'm not sure of the exact date), @PennSilverTaco is correct. Even with no injury, damage to any property, it's still considered a violent crime. Therefore, lifetime ban. Federal, not just the one state.

    I'm pretty sure I know people with DUIs less than 20 years ago who own guns...

    What state was their conviction? That's the key

    They're not close friends; I'm pretty sure they have had prior DUIs and own guns...

    True, but that means if your conviction was in Pennsylvania.

    I just remember talking to someone here in PA who had a DUI and owns guns; I believe it was someone I met in a bar, ironically...

    Also, I know a guy who lost his license for underage drinking (but wasn't driving and thus didn't get a DUI) and owns numerous guns including at least one AR-15. Pennsylvania recently lost a lawsuit over the suspension of driver's licenses for underage drinking when the person wasn't driving. Pennsylvania doesn't pull that shit anymore. If you get caught drinking underage, you face a citation and possible arrest, but you won't lose your license!

    That could be that the punishment PA levies for a DUI doesn't include that. MA does.

    But if you were to move to Pennsylvania, I don't think they give a shit if the DUI was in another state (or commonwealth in both of our cases). I know that certain types of guns are illegal in Massachusetts regardless of whether or not you have a criminal record, like certain variants of the AR-15; Massachusetts is a beautiful state, but it is right there with California and New Jersey in terms of shitty gun laws.

    I wouldn't move to any state that requires me to put two license plates on my truck (except maybe Texas), let alone one with gun laws as restrictive as those in Masschusetts. I think a front license plate looks kind of ugly...

    PA might not per se but the ban is a federal one as a result of the "violent" piece of it.

    Oh believe me I've a list of gripes here, besides that and my bitching about the cold weather.

    Long ago it was 2..like when I was a kid or so. At some point it went to one, then back to 2. The recent change to 2 was in I think 1995, at least when I renewed my registration I had to get 2. I don't love the look of it either but at least when someone rear-ended me in a drive thru and took off it worked out, when I was in my car I was able to read and write down the front plate.

    @ABA180
    @ColoradoTJ

    I have a friend who is legally blind due to macular degeneration, and he owns a handgun and I believe a shotgun as well. He had absolutely no problem whatsoever buying his guns, and he moved from PA to Florida one year ago. He tried to apply for a carry permit here in PA, but was declined, and he doesn't know why. He did some research, and being legally blind doesn't preclude somebody from getting a CCW. Years ago, he was riding with a friend in Manhattan and the friend got pulled over. My friend got a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt, and he never paid it. He believes that the NYPD may have issued a warrant for his arrest, but he isn't sure. He was able to renew his passport and go to England a few years ago, so his ability to travel abroad wasn't affected. I've talked to a few people, and they don't seem to think that a seatbelt warrant out of NYC would prevent a PA resident from getting a carry permit.

    And they also have state-controlled liquor stores; Pennsylvania has that too and it's pretty much universally loathed by everyone who lives here, but the unions representing the liquor store employees have an iron grip on things.

    Sometime in the 2000s that actually changed here, before it was illegal to sell on Sundays. I was still drinking back in the early 2000s and remember always stocking up on Saturday, quite a few times having to drive to NH where they still sold 7 days.
