Shiiiiit! $35K if you’re lucky! Buddy of mine turned his 90s Yota into a Class 7, finally got it all finished. Fun as hell, until we rolled it the first day out. All that work/money/time….gone. Bent the chassis beyond repair, then parted out the rest.

That was before the internet, so no build thread.

Don’t do it OP. You’ll regret it. Get yourself a trailer and a SXS and feel the wind in your face & have a lot of cash left in your account. My little JD Gator is not a high performance SXS, but it would probably out wheel 98.9% of the trucks on this site. I bought it used in mint condition for $5,500. It’s a little animal and goes everywhere.

 

Drive 2500 miles straight on road and let me know lol.

 

Will do! I literally dont give one shiot, I'm throwing spider 9s under my truck/caging it/all the other bs someday and will still drive it everywhere. Already do drive it 2k miles round trip to Moab, Rubicon, etc.
In high school I daily drove my pickup that was caged with no windshield, all the wheeler junk, etc.

 

check out ADS. Stands for Arizona Desert Shocks. That should get you started on pricing.

Headstrong offroad sells ADS. Put next to a King and you can see the difference just with external components/coating. Run Eibach coils. Shit gets soft and fluffy when warm

I could talk about the hidden costs of depreciation and how that's vastly different when ripping into a new truck vs old. I could also mention the obvious front end cost is different when your base vehicle is new, and how the cost of parts is different. I could even stretch and say that there is a difference in the difficulty of getting your insurance and any possible lienholders to all agree on the value of the vehicle after modification.

On a different note there is also the consideration of how new trucks have a lot more electrical devices and that significantly increases the challenge of modifying, bypassing, deleting, or ignoring them whenever they don't play nice with whatever you're doing. It also makes maintenance and repairs -of which there will be an awful lot of both - much more difficult with modern ECUs and and the harness that wraps around the drivetrain. And with each generation of vehicle there is an ever increasingly strict compliance on emissions control, which runs the challenge of getting a newer generation truck to pass inspection after modifying.

Hell, with modern safety sensors and stability control, it's actually getting to the tipping point where it would be easier to make a SxS street legal than it would be to make a pickup truck trail ready.

 

Ah. I’ve been screwed on warranties so many times I don’t even bother. One thing I always forget is some people don’t do their own work. So I could definitely see it being a bad idea for someone to void a warranty that can’t fix stuff.

I usually want a couple 1000 miles before tearing into it just to make sure nothing early breaks. After that I do whatever.

Good point. I’m still thinking of my model year which was a 2016 and I didn’t have to worry about too many electronics. I didn’t touch my emissions and a long travel kit has nothing to do with emissions either. So no worries there.

As far as costs go it’s not much different to install a long travel on day a 2010 as it is a 2016 or newer. At least from what I remember. My 2016 was no different in cost than older models.

 

Super easy to make a SXS street legal in Idaho, imagine it is the same in Wyoming. Believe the only restriction is you can’t drive on the interstate. And why would you? Interstate driving is miserable no matter what you’re in.

I used to fix my own stuff, have been doing it for decades…now at the point of beyond over it. Why I finally broke down and bought a new truck. If there are warranty issues, easier to raise hell than bust my knuckles.

Even simple things like changing oil, this is the first time in 40 years of driving I ever let someone else do it, gotta to say it is awfully nice.

True, every persons level of miserable is different. My tolerance sure has gotten lower as I have gotten older. lol! Now we beat the shit out of ourselves on the trail, but want comfort on the ride to and fro. Even gave in and bought an automatic this go around since they are easier to drive with broken or sprained appendages.

 

I get so tired of seeing pissing matches on here of other ppl pushing their builds on other ppl. Its so stupid. I wish mods would clean some of that stuff up. PPL just cant see past their own context its ridiculous.

Don’t think anyone is pushing anything, if you don’t like what you read…could always scroll or not click on the thread. Hell, I don’t even own a SXS…we call them idiot chariots, because they are destroying off roading with their “I can do whatever I want” attitude. Instead of treading lightly.

That said, speaking from experience…it is a better buy and will have more fun buying one of those than tossing money at Tacoma. Decent upper end LT kit is marginal improvement at best compared to an off the shelf SXS. This will flat out smoke a built Tacoma off road, and can get in tighter spots.

I might hold an entirely different opinion against that guy, but I didn't read it like him pushing his build. And it didn't upset me if that was his agenda. The pure spirit of this site is to genuinely see, share, and enjoy when someone does something different. Who knows, maybe someone's Hawaii-bro build will challenge my narrow context of a worldview enough that I'll copy some elements of that build for my truck. Probably not, but maybe. You never know.

I wouldn't LT in a million years and I'll argue towards the negative all day long whenever someone asks, but if someone points to their LT build, I'll still appreciate it. It's automotive art. It's not for my garage (or my wallet), but I can still appreciate the crazy bastards that took it on. If someone wants to push their build, I'll look. It's why I'm on Tacoma World.
