TPMS offroad question?

Haven't yet aired down tires while wheeling; does the TPMS deactivate so you don't have to put up with it telling you your tires are low?

Its better than that! It goes orange for mid range pressures, and you can keep an eye on them when offroading.

I love that feature personally.

 

What brought this question up was that it was a cold morning here in CA and the fronts were below the 26psi. Indications are the tire symbol on the combination meter and when looking at the individual tire pressures the fronts were what I thought were RED, but they could have been ORANGE. I will have to monitor. I will also look later to see if there are settings in Tech Stream to any settings as to when the system activates.
@Bishop84 could you elaborate as to why you like to be told something that you already know and have put into effect?
I understand keeping an eye on the individual pressures while wheeling, but the tire symbol is too alerting for me. Keeping an eye on the individual pressures could indeed be helpful in case you pick up a stick or rock in the bead and have a slow leak you might not pick up on until you were completely flat and breaking a bead completely. Well, maybe after thinking this over I can see your point in liking it.

 

So the TPMS system is regulated for safety and fuel economy, so you can't really modify its threshold lower. That light will always come on. It's supposed to.

I had a 2016 model, I'm not 100% sure if the new models do the orange still. But I liked how Toyota acknowledged it's not dangerous but a concern.

I like most of us on here like data and feedback. It's just nice to keep an eye on the pressure during breaks without having to get out of the truck.

 

This is my go-to screen so that I can always keep an eye on them, for best tire life. Wether I air down or up.

 

If you must, you can hit the Reset button on the dash. From there, if you can keep the speed up for quite a distance, it will reset the threshold and the warnings will go away. I tried this a few times and was only successful once. In the end, the one extra dash light is NBD, as there will be others on for 4wd, TCS, and sometimes, the seat belt.

 

It doesn't beeps at you the whole time or anything annoying like that.
The low pressure light will be on, but you can ignore it if you choose since you already know the pressures are low and why they're low.


My first time airing down I overshot my target of 20psi and ended up at 14-15psi in each tire. I was a little concerned with it being my first time airing down and driving over rough rocky terrain that I'd pop a bead at that pressure. So I kept the tire pressure screen up on the display the whole time checking it every so often to make sure the pressures didn't get any lower. Using that screen was reassuring for me.
The little orange low pressure warning light? It was just one of many that were lit up while driving in 4-Lo.

 

Yeah. Initially, I was worried when off camber and such. Never at issue. One person was trying to pop a bead at 6psi and really struggled. Was only able to do it by sliding hard in gravel.

We had some fun reseating them. Took a couple tries with an aerosol. It was hilarious.

 

If you have time to look at your dash, you aren’t wheeling hard enough.

 

Well, you are all right. That one extra light will not bother me at all when more lights are on. I overreacted with just the one light on. Tech Stream will not modify anything in the TPMS.

TS can modify the thresholds, I believe. If you go into the TPMS ECU and use Utility?

I meant the TPMS Reset button at the bottom of the dash. It relearns the tire positions and resets the threshold based on the individual pressures in each tire.

 

But there's an absolute minimum low threshold that I think is low 20's. It won't set a new threshold below that on a reset and I can't find any parameter in techstream to modify it.

 

In 4lo with the locker engaged, the dash lights up like a Christmas tree, so one more TPMS light won't stand out. I've inadvertently climbed obstacles with the e-brake on for this reason.

 

Ah yes, the anti-rollback feature engaged.

 

Tech Stream 16.20.023 on a 2021 OR has no ability that I can find to change the threshold values. On the way down the tire symbol turns on below 24psi (otherwise a displayed 23psi) and turns off once 26psi is reached. Just took a drive to confirm.

Is there a newer version of Tech Stream out yet? Not that I think it would address this concern. I ask for other reasons, such as not being able to get rid of that blasted seatbelt warning.

 

Techstream only accesses the software as it exists on the truck so if the option isn't built-in a new version of techstream won't create it.

 

When you rotate tires, how does the system reorganize them on the display? Rotating front to back, would the display show the rears are now in the front?

 

You press the button under the dash and truck does some measurements and calculations to determine where the tires are. My belief is it measures steering angles and speed of the tires.
