It the msrp on the website + shipping. I have it in writing. Not sure what the “hold back is” but its web price + freight and got the fees (not outrageous)

I promised a car for full college scholarship. So I don’t regret it but I see your point. The rule was no scholarship no car,

The point being "in writing" MSRP is padded with an instant mark-up.

And good for you on the requirement for a scholarship. That's smart thinking. A reasonable give and take.

If you have a good kid why not. It’s not like your going to have to pay for schooling which is an accomplishment on its own. I had to buy all my cars but I was a shithead so rightfully so. I learned if I wanted to be a shithead things were going to be hard. My sister both got full rides and my dad helped them with there cars. They hit learned if you do good things good things come. They are both successful young business women this day and I am well off in my career as well. He’s either going to succeed or he’s not whether you buy him a car or he buys it himself. Showing your some that keeping your word is just as important is another great thing your doing

Everyone is different. My kid is better than me. Glad I can help him out.
My kid had an athletic and academic scholarship. He made money going to school. Buying him a vehicle was cheap. So, believe it or not.

Basic auto and home repair/maintenance I regard as essential life skills.

Always teach your kids the skills you have, it's free to them and likely to make them or at least save them money at some point in their lives.

my dad bought me a single cab manual 4-cylinder 5-lug Tacoma (silver-2003) and it was one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned. I learned how to fix everything on that truck including replacing the clutch. I made so many memories in that little truck. Slept under the stars many times and had a little 3” spindle lift and 31” tires on it…Depends on your sons needs. The Maverick just looks kinda lame to me (Not my taste in body design) and not something a new driver should have when they should learn on a stick (clearly biased). You do what you think you should do OP.

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
An 18 y/o lad isn't going to want to sit and wait for the service dept to process all the shit wrong with a brand new model Ford nor will he be happy when they have it for weeks and he's too young to receive a rental car in the meantime. Remember, the Mav is a new model from the "new generation" of Ford where they build shit and the paying customer does all the testing.

I’m leaning towards letting him drive it for 3 years and then upgrade his car and give that car to my daughter.(she’ll be 16 in 3 years)

So I'm about to retire ( at 54 Yrs old) in December and was going to buy another Tacoma (son has an 07 4x4) for myself and downgrade from my full size 09 Silverado. I was just wondering what 3rd Gen to stay away from. I'm liking a bunch of 2021's with low miles and it will probably be my last truck. I have a hunting camp in Northern Maine and will still need a 4x4. Just asking for some thoughts. Thank You

Every one is not bad. Pick what you can afford and go with it.

Sure are a bunch of crotchety old guys in here.

My old man gave me a 1960 Chevy short stepside in 1973, first thing I did with summer job money was buy a 327 with double hump heads out of a 64 SS Impala that got rear ended, then upholstery and paint. Drove it two years then he said lets do some horse tradin. He offered up for trade a 1968 Torino GT fastback with a 289 2 bbl that was smoking, and a almost new 289 out of a 66 Shelby GT350 that had been gutted and converted to drag car with a set back 427. Again, paint job and torque thrust mags and I was set for about 3 more years.

So dont assume every young fella is going to tear shit up.

To the OP, you know your kid better than anyone, if you think he deserves it, then good on you.

I had a 97 Chevy Lumina and that was a good one.
I am not going to count the 93 Mercury Topaz that I got a year before that. What a piece of junk.

84' Chevy Chevette here. Every time I see one on the road (which is rare), I have a PTSD episode.

You had working headlights? Impressive. Mine would go out randomly, usually while I was driving it. It was a fucking death trap of a car, and I was made fun of daily by people who knew me. NO ONE ever wanted to ride in my car.

It is the only car I have ever wished death on.

Wait you had a random light go out too? My driver side would start to flicker only when I got near the airport, it was great with the amount of cops that patrol near the airport.

I had a cherry bomb exhaust, and air ride in the back. Worst car ever but I loved that thing.

Sadly this isn’t the norm. Kids get handed everything because parent “don’t want them to struggle like we did” mentally, but in actuality they’re doing a disservice because once you’re gone, their kids won’t be able to defend for themselves in the real world.

But from all these comments, apparently everyone has perfect kids…..
