    Oh look, another mod....
The new model year usually shows up around mid-late October. Sometimes they don't show up until November, but historically I've seen the new model year right before Halloween.

My local dealers site just updated with their first 2023 allocations this week.

I was just at the dealership and they said that they were expecting some 23’s any day but everything was already spoken for. I bought my wife a new Prius (22) last week and it was the only new car on their lot.

I would be inclined to put money down on a bet the first 2023s hitting a dealership won't happen until the latter half of October. I've been keeping an eye peeled for folks posting their VINs over on the "How long did you wait...?" thread, and so far the earliest 2023 build date I've seen was for "Week 36", which, depending upon whether it is Guanajuato or Tijuana, could be as soon as this next week. My Week 34 Tacoma built in Guanajuato will most likely not get to my dealership until mid-October; I suppose it is possible for some dealerships in the southern/border states to get them maybe the third week of October, but before that, my gut says not happening.

I have a '22 TRD Off-road 4x4 DC MT in silver scheduled to show up at my dealership the middle of October, which would make it the very last of the '22's. What's everyone's opinion on taking this '22 vs waiting another month for an early '23? There's nothing new in the '23 model year that I'm interested in, so the pros/cons as far as I know only come down to whether you'd like to have a '22 or '23 when you resell it.

Having sold used vehicles before, it seems to me that most people don't care that much what model year it is as much as what generation it is, but people do tend to match up mileage with year. So in 5 or so years I would have a '22 Tacoma with x-number of miles, which would be LOWER mileage for number of years owned, vs a '23 with the same number of miles on it, would seem like higher miles for the same amount of time (since it would seem like I had the truck for a year less). On the other hand, less sophisticated buyers may not even look at the vehicle if they make their search for "something not older than a '23."

This is all assuming, of course, that my dealer has the same or similar vehicle in their first '23 allocation, as I'm not really willing to wait months and months for another truck to come along when I have the one I want already inbound, with my name on it.

Week 36-er here, and I think you're right. My scheduled build date is 9/22. Dealer says it's 2-4 weeks to get it here after that. Definitely planning on it being closer to four weeks than two, but I MIGHT be helped by the fact that there is no rail or boat nonsense for us here in UT.

Given the relative rarity of 6MT Tacomas compared to their automatic brethren, when you are offered an allocation which matches your requirements, my opinion is jump on it. In my case I put a deposit down on a 2022 Tacoma TRD Sport, 6MT, Premium Package with Advanced Tech Package, in Blue Crush Metallic back in February, my dealer didn't get an allocation even close to my ask until August, and when they did, the Tacoma matched my list of requests except color; long story short, my Blue Crush Metallic truck is going to show up with Barcelona Red Metallic paint. :)

Congratulations! Which factory is your Tacoma coming out of? If Tijuana I can understand "no boat and no rail", but for Guanajuato, I thought the logistics for virtually all trucks included a first step on Mexican rail, most of which go to the port of Veracruz.

Yep, it's TJ. I assume it'll still have to sit at a port in San Diego for a while, but I feel fortunate that I'm not waiting on rail and ship transfers!

These days if you get your hands on a truck, buy it. If you want, try to get another and resell for profit.

Agree with @Horseshoez on the manuals. I scoured the vehicle inventory spreadsheet floating around here and saw my specific build in 3 trucks around the entire country. I traveled out of state to buy it and had the haggle of my life to secure a deal.

I'm assuming you have a VIN indicating it's a '22, because otherwise I'm wondering if that's instead a '23 based on the late delivery date?

Yes, I agree with both those statements. My salesperson is very communicative, and I just told him that if an allocation of '23's comes in before my truck gets here then I'd like a crack at getting one if it matches what I want. He's amenable to that. I'm paying MSRP without any dealer fees or dealer-installed options for the one I have reserved, and I'm pretty sure he'd give me the same deal on a '23. Still, "a bird in the hand" and all that makes a lot of sense.

Right on. You used the same phrase "bird in the hand" that got me into my '22. Good luck!

A word of caution; there is a thread around here with the word "blacklist" in it; in that thread the OP describes how he "settled" for a Tacoma (an automatic model if I recall correctly) and then opted to sell it to a dealer who offered him an allocation for a 6MT model; when the 6MT came in Toyota wouldn't let the dealer sell him the truck because he got blacklisted for reselling his almost new vehicle.

I read that thread! I'm not interested in flipping trucks. The truck I get is the truck I'll keep.
