What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Gotcha. Yea not a lot of people talk about the amount of frame rub they have with the different wheel and tire combos out there.
There was a thread about 35's a while back where a guy notched the frame for I believe 4 or 4.5bs wheels. I'll try and find it, but he notched a good amount of the frame and reinforced the area. Albeit that is on the extreme side of things if trying to keep a 35 completely under the stock fenders and flares.

You doing fiberglass fenders while still mid travel?

 

Yeah I'll be doing the fiberglass fenders as soon as they come back from being painted. Should be perfectly flush with their edge on this set of wheels and tires.

 

Nice. Curious to see how it looks. Most setups I've seen with MT and fiberglass looks a bit goofy.

Who makes the ones you got?

 

I think cause most folks are used to seeing LT trucks still poke outside the fiberglass we are conditioned to seeing that. Once I have LT it'll poke again, for now it'll be better covered than my 33s on the stock fenders was. They're Fiberworx

 

The amount of frame rub with 35s (or 315s) is also probably kind of subjective, and possibly also greatly different from one tire manufacturer's tire size to another. It's also going to matter how wide the wheel is.

I thought my frame rub would be A LOT worse than it actually is, based on a lot of what I read on here.

I'm running 4.75 backspace Pro Comp wheels (17x8.5)
Spidertrax 1.25 spacers
Overall backspace of 3.5

I have VERY minimal frame rub at full lock and stuff



EDIT - It's also going to depend on the bump stops. I'm running Durobumps on the back of my LCAs and modified Superbumps on the front side of my LCAs.

 

True. I've never been a huge fan of that much poke. a little bit is fine, but I'd rather it be closer to flush with the side than too far inboard or outboard.
I had my time without fender flares and 3.5bs wheels and it got real old real quick with how much shit got flung all over the side of my truck at the first sign of moisture.

Found that thread. It was with 4.5bs wheels which explains why he cut so much. I would think you wouldn't have to cut very much if anything at all with a wheel with 1in of less backspacing.

I was gonna ask you about your experience on the matter. That's reassuring to hear because that would essentially be the same config as me if I were to go 35's minus the spacers w/ my 3.5bs wheels. Do you have any rub at the front of the frame? or is it all at the rear?

 

It's all behind the wheel. I don't have any rub at all in front of the wheel.

All this time I've also not really loved the fact that I'm running spacers. But it's actually going to be in my benefit when I do LT. I'll be 2.5 inches narrower (with LT) than if I was running LT with 3.5 BS... because I'll lose the spacers.

 

Yea for going forward with LT, it makes sense with the wheel you have now. That would be real wide with a 3.5 kit AND a 3.5bs wheel.

 

Ya... and just having done Swamp Lake, and Dusy/Ershim... That width would be muy no bueno.

 

Same footprint as the stock battery, but about 1" taller with dual posts, so nothing really to show! Had to make cable extensions since the main posts are in the middle of the battery, but otherwise it starts like a champ.

 

Got a great deal on new rubber and some newer Toyota wheels. Also restored the fender flares and plastics.

Are these fenders paintable? I’ve heard yes and no…

This picture brings back the memory of putting the tire on and off 20 times double checking fitment lol. Worst part of the whole deal I think.

 

Definitely getting my upper body workout from it. Think I have the pass side entirely cut out to clear now though, so on to making a couple panels.

 

I’m sure you’ve already accounted for this, but give yourself a little extra clearance when the tire is stuffed. The tubs will add back some dimension after panel thickness, welding, seam seal, paint, etc.
From your last photo it looked like the tire was right up against the cut edge of the firewall.

 

I have no bumpstops in right now, so everything is more stuffed than it really should ever be, but I am going to cut back a little more of the inside edge
