You will find some good reviews on towing with the KDMAX-Pro+XT on this thread. You will definitely feel the benefits towing with the Pro+XT.
ECT on in S4 is spot on for towing.

The most up to date KDMax-Pro+XT tows really well.
The tune is the same on all 3 throttle settings, just the the throttle sensitivity (tip in) is different--Lite, Normal, and Sport.
You should be able to tow a small trailer in Drive with no problems. Heavier trailers in ECT or S4 or both.

Just set up with the KDMax-Pro+XT, couple of trips under my belt with it. definitely smoother power, more refined, shifting is better, more predictable, and nowhere near as violent at the stock shift logic. MPG's are up too. this one is a winner, and the way the truck should act! thank you to @PapaRee , and @TWTaco and all the beta testers, and tuners out there, you can tell this is a great investment and upgrade to our 3rd Gens! if you are on the fence... it is money well spent! yesterday on a 50 mile round trip, on 2 lane roads, averaging 55-60 mph, with a few country towns thrown in for stop and starting, I averaged 24.2 MPG's. not saying I would get that all the time but, I wasnt trying to get hypermileage, just driving with STD cruise, and foot (alternating, due to conditions). usually I average a bit over 20 but, never much over. the trip up to the destination, I had a 4 stroke dirt bike, in the bed of the truck. the return trip, we were empty.

Like I said, the tune is the real deal! if you are on the fence, the only perceived small downside, to be considered could be, the up front cost... and in the grand scheme of things, that isnt much of a downside, when it will pay you back with mpgs, and miles of smiles. when you look at all the "crap" we buy for these things, to accessorize for ourselves... the tune cost provides benefits, far beyond aesthetics. So, in my mind, there are no downsides. like nike said... JUST DO IT! Ski

    Ski,

You summed it up very nicely! I’ve told my customers over and over where are you going to find a mod that brings immediate satisfaction, function, and the potential boost in MPG’s for $400? Didn’t bolt on one single mechanical part and can immediately feel the difference, amazing!

Can you guys help me find the part of these threads that talks about hp/torque gains of the various tunes? I know the remapping is way more than just that but I’m curious. Please bear with me I know this has been answered just cannot find it because there’s an overwhelming amount of content. Thank you.

Edit - the very first post says around 30 each lol.. sorry. Ignore.

Flashed both these guys with sport throttles. Both just couldn't stop smiling driving their seemingly brand new vehicles! They live in a mountain town with plenty of backroads and hills and the gear hunting was driving them nuts. The 4Runner said his truck was a gutless POS before the tune and couldn't believe the difference after! Great job @PapaRee and @TWTaco developing an amazing product!

What’s the consensus on the top 2-3 “best” tunes? **bracing for angry posts challenging my ability to perform basis research**

The best and most popular 3 are KDMax, OTT, and BlackHawk.
Just make sure you always compare the most recent, up to date tune. All 3 groups have older versions that are not as good as the most recent updates!!
A tuned truck is going to always be better than stock. Improved shifting, throttle, MPGs, efficiency——DRIVABILITY!

We do have a tuner that covers the area. I believe he travels, so you would have to reach out to him to see when he will be around next.

You may consider KDMAX remote tuning option. It allows you to tune it yourself and you then have control to change as you please even if I may say a different tune (blasphemy). Check out @wahoobie for information and pricing!

I’m just 4.5 hours from Houston. I will make the trip and spend a night if you can get 4-5 trucks/4Runners for me to tune. We have done this in the past. Let me know if you’re interested and have some friends with Tacomas and 4Runners.

Awesome. On fence between KDMAX Pro and Blackhawk. Some questions:

    1. is there a big difference in the personalities of the tunes? Is one more low end torquey or have more HP gains? How do the dyno graphs compare?

    2. do both tunes preserve the d4s port injection Atkinson cycle for cleaning / longevity?

    1. I have never ran the other tunes, but I’m sure they have similar gains to ours. You won’t be disappointed with the KDMax-Pro+XT!! Extra torque and HP.
    2. Yes, we leave enough port injection for cleaning while eliminating as much of the Atkinson cycle as possible.

Sorry for double posting but realized I placed it in the incorrect thread.

Not sure why but I am just seeing far better MPG with the Pro+XT than I did with the 6.0 and Pro+.

just finished our third tank of fuel since upgrading. This tank was 1/2 highway and the rest city driving. For the last year after every fill up we would get 344 or 345 distance to empty. Today we saw 361!

truck runs great and gettingover 22mpg mixed city driving. This is our primary vehicle so we take it everywhere. So very happy, especially with the higher prices at the pump, with more mpg.

    great work guys!

What’s the main difference between these two versions of KD?

Is there a place we can get technical details, dyno charts etc? Things like maintaining safe engine compression, wear and tear on the HPFP, Atkinson cycle time, etc matter to me and it seems very hard to get to this granular level so I can pick what works best for me.
