Our prius has been running great on 0w-20 synthetic for 10 years, and over 100k trouble free mile's. It cranks over easier in the dead of winter, and gets great fuel economy. Run whatever viscosity you want, but i still think the manufacture knows best what to run in their engines.

The 2GR-FKS is spec’d for 5w-30 around the world. Check the Australian Toyota Kluger owners manual - it specs just about every viscosity under the sun for the 2GR-FKS in Aus.

Not that it makes a difference either way, but you should be fine running 5w-30 and you’ll probably save a few bucks doing so.

Toyota USA specs 0W-20 to appease the EPA. You’re not in the USA anymore so go bananas with your choice of oil viscosity. Just don’t use a Fram filter…

Thermostat keeps the engine at a constant temperature +/- a few degrees.

Fram sells both the best and the worst filter on the market, and until recently both were manufactured by secondary company that also made filters for other companies that the community considers top quality. Fram has now been purchased by Trico and I cannot determine if they took manufacturing in house or who else the manufacture produces for

I would never put a Frame Orange can of death on anything I own, but I put the Fram Ultra on EVERYTHING.

I've been using those orange fram oil filters on my kawasaki lawn tractor engine since 2002. Its got close to 800 hrs on the motor, plus i probably should change the oil more often than every other year.

They have been used on millions of vehicles for many many millions of miles, I will admit they are not guaranteed death to everything they are run on. Still, on the quality scale they are decidedly at the bottom compared to many other filters.

For my old car the regular Fram was around $4, the Ultra under $10. Considering the synthetic media flows better (lower PSI drop and less likelihood of bypass on cold start) and it holds SIGNIFICANTLY more junk, I cannot see a reason to save the money.

In reality any oil related failure is HIGHLY unlikely. To notice the difference you probably have to run two identical engines for a few thousand hours and then measure the bearings to the thou...

Unless the radiator gets clogged in which case it runs hot even wide open. Thermostat doesn’t cool anything, it controls when the radiator can try to do it.

Mexicans use 5W-30 routinely in their 2GR-FKS and 2TR-FE.

Nice to see this. I’ve always used Australia as the reference (but not Tacomas since they don’t exist there and the Hilux doesn’t have the 3.5) - but it’s good to see the actual motor and truck in Mexico recommending exactly what I’ve pulled from the Australia manual. That basically bearing in mind the temperature, up to 15W-40 is perfectly fine.

The thermostat determines the temperature at which water starts circulating through the cooling system, it doesn't always hold the engine at 190 degrees. It might during cool or cold weather.

The coolant temperature can and does rise beyond 190 degrees, especially if running in extremely high ambient air temps when towing or crawling through the desert during the summer.

    Heat builds.
With outside temps just over 100 degrees, the sidewalk temp can be over 140 degrees.
With outside temp under 100, vehicle interior temp can approach 140 degrees.
Outside temp 90 degrees, exterior door knob temp can be 125 degrees.......

A vehicle radiator's ability to shed heat determines coolant temp, and the temp of the engine and the coolant can and sometimes does rise above the radiator's ability to keep the coolant and engine from overheating.

I would love to use 5w-30 in the '20 I just bought, but it came with a lifetime powertrain warranty and if I have a problem and my receipts show and oil not approved in the American manual I would be screwed I bet.

I find it rather odd that charts shows little to no difference in the oil grades from 0w-20 to 5w-30. I can get all the 5w-30 mobil1 here cheap vs their 0w-20 so i might as well try it.
