I like the power of the rear drum brakes; in 4 wheel drive it is possible to lock up all 4 wheels with the parking brake. This could never happen (on dry pavement) with the mini drum in a disc brake rear.

Yup. It was just like that. It was at a friends house. The previous owner had the driveway installed by some joker who didn't know what they were doing. It definitely was not built to code.

It's a truck not a sports car- don't waste your money. Your truck will stop the same with the rear discs.

Yes it does. The handbrake loses a little bit of pressure but it works perfectly fine.

I understand the desire to spend less money, but it’s pretty straight forward science… when you add pistons and braking surface, the performance will increase. To me, it’s more about how important the increased performance is for each driver.

Front brakes do most of the job already, anyway.

The Tacoma is about as rigid as a wet noodle, not sure if rear braking power would help much.

The only time the rear drums enter my mind is when I see a thread like this, so they must be doing the job just fine.

Drum brakes maybe around for a while. The future for Tacoma will be all 4-wheels will have disc brakes.

My 2001 Toyota Camry has factory ( 4-wheel disc brakes) 186,000 miles on the car. Never fail, never get any lock-ups. It Rain a lot where I lived 1,200 elevation.

The future is disc brakes, technology is getting better.

The V-8 is dead. Electric will be the new king or queen. When the first cell phone came out it was the size of a brick, I had one ,even had a flip up antenna.

Pay phones where everywhere once before, progress of evolution makes the new today become history tomorrow.
Drum brakes is old cheap technology. But some people do not like changes. I wish I had 4-disc brakes on my 2019 TRD.

Do you guys think it will be easier to retrofit the 2024 Tacoma rear disc brakes onto earlier models like my 2022? Or if I'm going to do it would it be better to just do a conversion kit? I'm just curious at this point. I have not made up my mind one way or the other whether or not I am going to do this or not. But I do have the money if I really wanted to. But as someone else said earlier, that money might be better spent on a supercharger.

Give it time and someone on this forum will figure out how to vonvert the newer brakes over to an older model.

There are I believe two companies already selling Rear disc brakes for the third Gens.

A super charger maybe a better investment and a better value.

None to speak of, just enjoying it for the moment.
Seems like you ought to just trade your Tacoma and by a Hyundai Santa Cruz, at least it has 4 wheel disc brakes. Seems like you are having a disproportionately large number of rear brake issues.

Ever heard of ABS? ABS throws that out of the window.

My old ford didn't have ABS rear brakes and in situations where I had to slam on the brakes, the rear drums locked and I simply dragged tires, this is in prt due to the fact that 70% or so of your braking is in the front. Point is, converting them to disc wouldnt increase performance, at the end of the day the brakes locked the tire.

Add in complexities of ABS and your brakes unbrake themselves.

Ask any long time, respectable mechanic who lives in the Rust Belt which, rear setup gives the most problems...

And how often is the rear actually worked on compared to the front? Rear drum brakes can last the life of the vehicle in some cases

I like my truck and I have used it like it was meant to be used, but I will not buy another one unless they fix a few issues, and getting rear discs is on that list. They are there to save money, period.

The drums actually have much more surface area then disc so you loose braking surface but gain pressure.

The bigger concern is how shitty the front brakes are. Throwing (properly functioning) disc's on the rear would throw the bias way out whack.
