My oldest son ask for a John Deere pedal tractor when he was 2. We were struggling financially at that time, so I told him he would have to work for it. Didn’t think anything about it…after all he was 2. A week or so later I came home to find that he had rake the neighbors leaves filling multiple 33gal garbage cans. Darned if he didn’t earn that pedal tractor by his 3rd birthday. I bought a 92 Landcruiser for my kids to drive. Safe, Not Fast, incredibly dependable, and knew they wouldn’t get more that a couple hundred miles from home before having to fill it up with gas. It survived 3 kids and multiple trips to Colorado. Best investment I ever made!

Holdback is nothing new or sneaky, Toyota pays dealers 2% of the MSRP to cover expenses on the car/truck til it’s sold, the main expense is the interest on the loan for the car/truck, so figure out 2% of the MSRP and that’s the holdback, the quicker they sell the car the more they get to keep

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
That Mavrick looks like a nice little truck. Take the car back. He's only young once. Throw some sliders and skid plates on it. He can write its first serious off roading review after you tow his truck out of the ditch.. lol... get him the cute little pickup... it even comes in a Ford version of lunar rock...

Just look at that... I think people are over playing the reliability issue. My dad was Ford Ford Ford... he never had any serious mechanical issues.. and those were hard Alaskan dirt road/trail miles

Say what you want. That's a sharp looking "light" or small pickup.

There is enough whining about the quality of a Toyota made in Texas (now Mexico). Now think of a Ford made in Mexico (during COVID) designed to be as cheap as possible.
I sorta want to be on the Maverick forum just to watch the spectacle.

My son drives a 2003 Corolla - working on his Master's degree in Computer Science - soon to be making six-figures and will soon buy himself whatever he wants.

I'd never buy my kid a new car unless I was loaded with money - AND they were at least 21 years old.

Personally I think he is banking on my early demise so he can find himself behind the wheel of my Tacoma.

Just offered my godson(20yo) my 2014 tacoma TRD sport for what the dealer offered as trade in, he jumped on it. He has cash on hand. Way more responsible than I was at that age.

Most first vehicles of teen drivers get wrecked. It's a known statistic. I gave my oldest daughter our old Ford Escort to drive in high school. Didn't have it six months and was involved in a wreck. It wasn't her fault and the other drivers insurance had to pony up for repairs. I'd give him the used car first and see how he does for a couple of years. If he acts and drives responsibly, then you can always upgrade later. Just my 2 cents worth.

Was Ford or Toyota the first to adopt this method?

One more thing to think about. Insurance will be cheaper on the used vehicle, maybe :notsure:

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
I'm assuming your quest was somewhat rhetorical but Undoubtedly, CHEVY! But Ford was next. Until recently, with the mfg's chasing EPA bullshit requirements, at least Toyota has built quality and run it through testing for a long time before adoption. I love how so many people complain about things like the Forerunner that has used the same bulletproof transfer case analog shifting and mechanics for some odd 20 years....because it WORKS. There's a whole lot of that in the Toyota breed.

Just an opinion, but there is no comparison between the 1st Gen and the 3rd Gen when it comes to reliability. Toyota is not what it used to be in my opinion, which comes from spending a lot of time behind the wheel and nothing more.
