lol. Not quite. She's got a teacher in her mig class at school that seems totally uninterested in helping people actually learn and basically just leaves them on their own every class. She's been really frustrated with that all week, and her midterm is tuesday, so i set her up in my garage for the afternoon and she's figuring some shit out.

    That's good.

Our instructor was more or less the same sometimes but it wasn't out of lack of trying or anything, it's because most other students were younger and really lacked ambition to do anything more than just "satisfactory".

When I got hired right away at a fab shop, I started to learn a lot more and quickly which in turn led me to helping other students.

They all said I should apply as an 'aid' at the school since my approach at teaching something was much more inviting or w.e.

The instructor was good, especially at TIG (he had done it for +30 years) but having students that don't ask questions, or want to get involved to better themselves often can be hard to engage with.

Yeah. She's had some conversations with the instructor that shed some light into it - apparently the instructor has had a lot of students that just don't take advice and won't listen. Hard to keep trying when they keep pushing back. Unfortunately, that was figured out on the very last lab day before the midterm, so even though said instructor is now willing to help more, its a little late.

We'll see how it goes, uphill is still pretty rough.

Significantly lower wire speed and lower voltage.

I've ran a bead that passed bend tests at what, 165IPM at 16.8v uphill on 3/8" for my root. Uphill working either 1/8" or 3/32" gap and equal-sized landing.

As long as you remember that visually, the root must be flush or exceed no more than 1/8" though non-issue if you run a 1" wide backplate.

Hot and cover passes require no more than 1/8" to protrude from the surface.

I'm also finding that there's a bunch of stuff that she should know that they haven't been taught yet - like how to ground it properly. Worries me a bit, you'd think they'd cover those basics day 1 instead of 'here, fill this angle with metal...go.'

    I mean yes but no.

You'll learn immediately a ground is required, but it stops there. Up to the welder to remember to ground their stuff properly...especially if said item is off the welding table.

Take Zane using a bolt or an edge to clamp his ground on, or the flat stock I wedged between my crossmember and bumper today.

Hell I've had to weld stuff on a smaller table, but I'd normally lay a square tube across my larger welding table to the small table for my ground.

    Works just the same.

Jeep owners being so caught up in the many add-on lights, angry grills, rubber ducks, and Jeep meets to worry about personal hygiene.

This is how they kill 2 birds 1 stone.

Yep. Step 1 is what was missing. We went over it and it makes more sense now I think.

She also figured out that she needed less wire speed and voltage on her own...but was told by the instructor not to adjust the machine. Not sure whats going on there.
