Ok that looks cool for sure!

Since none of the pieces of the wings are tacked, I could always angle it and make it come straight up even higher.

    Yeah just edited it.

I can angle the "side" panel and just add steel plate in a vertical position to bring the side even higher.

Got plenty of steel left over to cover that. I'll just need to work up some more cardboard aided design which I'll do later today.

Hmmm...this whole side thing has got me stumped from an aesthetic standpoint.

    20220920_105511.jpg

    20220920_105515.jpg

Using the second pic, looking directly towards the back I can make it "step up" in the form of a triangle and square it up top.

But part of me says it'll look bulky.

I won't have to scrap the major pieces I've cut and really, I'm close to just tacking them in place versus using magnets to hold them up.

Just not looking to do a complete copycat of the above setup.

Said fuck it, I'll go the bent DOM route for my side guards.

Mainly because I've been set on using bent DOM for my wings on the front of my bumper.

Less extra work, and I'll just keep working forward to finishing it.

I've never welded on the face of an axle housing; do you guys drain your fluid or leave it be?

No more magnets; all tacked in place.

Leave it, it will be good to go.

Draining it is probably actually worse, without the fluid volume to dissipate the heat the thin layer left behind is more likely to smoke off

    Cool, thank you three.

Just figured once I start burning more shit in, during down time, I can burn in the guard I got for the front of my axle housing.

I'd like to start building some sort of skids for key areas below the vehicle as well.

For the meanwhile, running short seams on the inside before fully welding the outside.

I'm welding and flipping this thing around and I thought, how the fuck will I paint this thing without it being a pain in the ass.

That's a problem for future Nelson :anonymous:

All the seams on the inside are done.

You don't need to fully weld both sides, as long as the ends are all tied in and it's got penetration it's all good to go.

    20220920_131401.jpg

Damn thing's a lot bigger than my welding table.

    Break time, will continue tomorrow.

Welding is one thing, especially long ass single beads like these.

    20220920_135102.jpg

But it's the grinding that takes awhile. I want smooth lines where all parts meet to be rounded out on the outside.

I weld on anything that won’t blow up!:rofl::rofl::rofl:

preheat area w torch to 300 ish (use infrared laxer) if it’s the cast part, weld then 10 min later heat up to 300 again. Preheat, post heat.

The tubes weld like anything else. Kinda.

Happy to say that I was able to knock out the remaining exterior welds, as well as blend all the pieces in.

You're more anxious than I am

It's like @Wulf said it, starting was 80% of the battle and I hadn't really started until recently.

    A lot left to do;

    Gussets under the wings.

Bottom plate for the wings but only after figuring out a mounting point to the frame rails.

After that, the bumper itself will be done.

Next step would be buying 2" square tube, 3/16" thick, and figure lengths for my swingout.

I would like to ask on here, where does one buy a small delrin block or similar (not a round spacer) so I can use that with my stop? I see a lot of people use something similar to maintain gaps and prevent metal-on-metal.
