Oooooo, forgot about that. People unable to disengage during freezing temps...not a good time to wait to thaw out the drums.

LOL, I haven't had rear drums on any vehicle since the late 1990s, and yet I still run into the same issue with disc brakes.

I can't remember the last time I used mine. The only time I would use it would be if I was parking in an unusually steep place.

They don't necessarily "wear out"; it's more like they snap off and start rattling around in the transmission.

2021 ATX Tacoma - I almost always park with the parking brake engaged. Other car is MTX and it's a hard habit to break. Plus this feels nicer than having the trans violently pop into park when the pawl gets engaged.

Someone mentioned or started a thread where they had gone through a car wash and engaged their parking brake for the night--next morning, no moving allowed!

I think it was suggested to get a blow dryer of heat gun and thaw them out!

Quite dangerous with the fuel tank on the one side...

I use mine often...not sure of the mechanics of using it, however I assume it should be used occasionally just for the purpose of keeping it functional. I rarely used it on my Tundra and the one time I did, later in my 16 years of ownership, it didn't work. Not sure it was due to lack of use but that is why I use it more now in the Taco.

For me it depends on weather or not the parking brake's integrity is known. Using the parking brake from day one every time you stop stops the system from seizing up due to corrosion buildup. If you don't know if the parking brake is good don't use it, you run the risk of it getting stuck on and then you will be in trouble. I live in the rust belt and a parking brake can seize in just a few days if its not used.

Both of our current cars have 4-Wheel disc brakes, both got washed one very cold day in a bay near our (then) home, and the next day, neither car would move. Yes, both parking brakes were set (both cars are 6MT), but when the cars broke free the "CRACK!" of the breaking of the ice, and primarily from the front of both cars.

I would argue just the opposite; if one doesn't know the state of the parking brake system, start using it in a controlled environment so one can evaluate how effective it is; then once confidence is built up, use it regularly.

I seem to remember 60s - 70s Ford's having the pawl getting worn and wedging in place if regularly parked on hills.
You needed to get another vehicle to push and relieve the weight to get them out of park.

issue is if it gets stuck on your stuck, you can't even get the drum off to service it if its stuck on. I would only use an unknown parking brake if I went trough the whole system an replaced any thing the looked suspect first, and on an automatic its just not worth the time and effort to do that when I could just use park.

Shifter wouldn't move until the weight was off the pawl.
