Disc brakes are the same ago or older than drums. It is absurd that we have this argument here constantly. If you prefer to save the money on a vehicle purchase, that's a valid argument, but your strawman above is not.

Yes I am still having “locking-up brakes” issues. I am planning to keep my Tacoma for now. Tacoma forums as well other brands all have issues with there vehicles.

I am learning to live with mines. ( brakes locking up ), $3,000 is a lot to spend for rear disc brakes conversion.

If the situation gets worst I will sell my truck. I spent almost $15,000 for aftermarket parts and labor already.

So getting another truck? And making it to fit my needs and wants? Is not going to happen.

Tacoma is a good truck, it has its share of problems and troubles, you can see Toyota is going “cheap”. It’s the little things ….

Ev is a hundred years old, Very true is can be found on Google. I read it too.

When you watch those old Fords travel on muddy , rocky roads in those old days , makes our todays 4x4 look bad!

    I'll give my 2 cents

So I've had my drums lock up on me around a dozen times, have had to swap shoes on the side of the road due to them cracking in half (trying to drag the locked up wheel to move out of traffic), and eventually blew out a wheel cylider and almost crashed the truck (fun fact, ebrakes dont work at all with brake fluid/mud/water soaked drums).

Down on a California trip, had 2 buddies blow out wheel cyliders, and had another who had constant locking up problems.

Swapped to disks in the rear (trail gear kit, no ebrake but I know of a caliper with a mechanical ebrake built in that will work) and its been a huge improvement in stopping power, reliability, no brake fade in the rear, and piece of mind. Also, maintenance/swapping pads takes 5 minutes per side.

Still need to put a prop valve in, as the rears will lock up slightly before the front (my truck also has a crap ton of weight shift, dont even think the fronts will lock up with 37s). But, need to do 4runner/Gx brakes up front since the fronts suck now. During that, will be doing a hydro ebrake, and line lock.

Overall, drums are for cost savings and honestly suck for wet climates/wheeling/brake fade/ease of maintenance. Toyota just stuck with them since they are the same setup from way back when.

Before EV was a big deal I actually learned that at one of the Smithsonian museums in DC. Had no idea that they tried electric motors way back in those early days but makes sense
