I've been wrenching on cars for over 50 years and I maintain there is no way for a springless brake shoe to prevent a drum from turning. Yes, the shoe may rub a bit, but without sufficient pressure, the drum will turn.

Please describe the physics of how a broken return spring puts enough pressure on a brake shoe to cause a drum to not turn.

cause the cable, the part that forces the shoes out, is still engaged, because there is no force pushing it back.

So it has nothing to do with a broken spring, just a frayed cable?

If the springs weren't rusted and weak they would be able to pull the shoes back, but what do I know its impossible, I shouldn't believe my lyin' eyes.

No, one does not equate to the other. If, as you postulate, the cable is so frayed it is holding the shoes against the drum with enough force to prevent the car from moving, then no spring is going to pull the shoe back.

Remember this post? You went from "its impossible" to "a frayed cable can do that". I can only tell you what I've seen, a stuck cable and drum that wouldn't come off because the shoes were engaged. When the drum came off the springs were either weak or rusted through. If they had been in good condition the may have be able to pull the shoes back meaning a can get the drum off. The cable wasn't frayed just seize due to corrosion, loosened up after a few yanks in a vice. Just out of curiosity were have you been wrenching for 50 years?

Every time. The parking brake on my old Tundra froze up due to rust and it failed inspection. Cost about $400.00 to get it fixed. On the Tacoma I use it every time.

I still maintain a frayed cable will not be able to cause a vehicle to be "stuck". As for where, initially as a shade-tree mechanic, then as an engineer for three of the world's auto manufacturers.

Right its impossible and I shouldn't believe my lyin' eyes, that's some classic engineer thinking right there. I work in the rust belt, and parking brakes get stuck on here, it doesn't matter what you believe. Like I said before, to each his own.

LOL, I grew up in the Detroit area, trust me, salt and corrosion are rampant in that area.
