It is a comparatively old machine comprised of thousands of parts made by hundreds of suppliers, handled by hundreds of people and other machines before they were assembled by yet more machines and people into a truck which lives outside, 10" off the ground every day and is operated by and maintained by yet more people.

With that many variables it is both a minor miracle and a testament to how good modern manufacturing is that our vehicles actually start and move almost every day.

Short version: Machines wear out and break down every day, yesterday was your day.

Curious, how many times has the coolant been changed???

 

I've actually lost count of how many times the coolant has been changed. It got done twice in 2021 because that's when I first saw oil in the coolant, and it was attributed to someone at at the dealer using the same funnel for multiple jobs. It got done a second time that year as per the frame equipments...

That isn't an answer.

Specifically, how many times has the coolant been changed and at what years/miles since the truck was new in 2010?

The only thing protecting the head gaskets is the coolant, more specifically the additives in the coolant. The additives are depleted over time so even if it tests "good" for freeze protection doesn't mean that the additives are still protecting against corrosion.

There's a large group of these wind turbines in Centralia, and I saw plenty of them in California last month, but this is my first time seeing them this close up!

 

Not for beachfront, really..I'd never pay that much

 

There is one at the forest where l ride my mountain bike, the tower is insanely tall though.

 

I believe that this one is either damaged or getting serviced, as it's missing a blade...

The thermostat was stuck shut and has been replaced. My mechanic has informed me that the truck is running great. The system has been pressure-tested and the coolant has been flushed and replaced. My mechanic is also doing a leak-down test on the cylinder head to be absolutely sure the head gasket is good, but it looks like I'm out of the woods...

 

Great news!

Now all that’s left to do is enjoy that trip
