I really wish that were a $40 bottle. It would be a fantastic pick in every way at that price.

And I'm a big fan of their production process.

I bought a bottle of Caribou once because of the bottle and topper. My recollection is it was neither good or bad. I haven't seen a bottle around for a long time.

I bought that bottle at Peerless in Louisville when we were on the bourbon trail for $100. Got home and saw it at Frugal McDougal’s for $80. SMH.

Edit: whoops, meant to quote @jandrews.

Picked up something new and we’ll reviewed while on vacation more for a souvenir than anything else.

For you guys who have done the Bourbon Trail, any and all advice is appreciated. Planning a trip with 2 buddies. Going down for a few days. Any “musts”? After some research, I’m realizing how quickly shit starts to fill up as far as tours and tastings go. BT is a top priority to hit (I know it’s not on the trail). Others I’d like to hit are Wild Turkey, Heaven Hill, and Four Roses.

I checked out some recommended stores whilst out of town and some others that I happened across. Heck of a day, here’s what I found. I’ve listed prices if they were substantially above retail or if I don’t know retail. Would love your help in deciding what to procure, also sharing what I’ve already snagged.

Knob Creek 15 (bought at retail)
    Blue Note Crossroads
    Widow Jane Lucky 13, $130
Russell’s Reserve 13, trying to negotiate down to $150/bottle for 3, probably a pipe dream, they are listed at $250 each.
Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend, $160 (bought)
    Russell’s Reserve Rye Single Barrel
    Heaven Hill BIB, $50
Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit Single Barrel
    Maker’s 46 Cask Strength
    Larceny Barrell Proof A122, $80
Schoonover 14 Uncut Unfiltered, price unknown
Old Ezra 7 Barrel Strength, $87
Rabbithole Othello Single Barrel Cask Strength, price unknown

I just did it a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed Jim Beam for the history and you see more of the process than you did at the other tours I took. I learned the most about bourbon there.

Buffalo Trace , while cool felt like mostly a sales pitch and you are limited to one bottle of Buffalo Trace and whatever one other they decide to release that day. When I went it was Eagle Rare and sold out by 1230. Four Roses is pretty nearby so if you are doing both, do them together because they're further from Louisville.

If you stay right on the main street in Louisville you can hit Michters, Rabbit Hole, Evan Williams, Old Forrester and Angels Envy just walking. Plus stop by Justin's house or bourbon for some rare/hard to find stuff, but expect to pay a premium.

Evan Williams also had a couple of distillery only bottles you could get after the tour.
