I get to play mechanic this weekend, first repairs to be made on the Stupid Duty. Last Saturday, I got the truck inspected and actually failed . Guy had the driver's side wheel off the ground and you could shake it back and forth (like something was loose in the steering, wheel bearings are fine). They get it in the repair bay, get things tightened up and tell me it's good, give me a sticker and tell me I should look at getting it aligned soon, or to bring it back to them, they just couldn't do it that particular day. I got to thinking about it, 'hmm... what could cause the clunk or shake'. I tore into it last night, loosened the clamps at either end of the steering rod (the piece that connects the tie rods), one side does not have any play because it's a threaded connection, the other side starts getting sloppy. Clearly, something is stripped, either the tie rod or the connector rod. I called a bunch of dealers today, first appointment I can even get is 2 weeks out. Tried looking at rental cars and most of the ones near me don't even have cars to rent! So, we're a single car family for the time being, I bought the parts today and will be tearing the truck apart this weekend. I'm replacing both tie rods and the connector rod. Even have a method devised to re-align the truck once I'm done. What could possibly go wrong? :fingerscrossed:

Oh, I don't know about this one... Oil changes and tire rotations, I'm happy to have them alongside helping out. Tie rod ends, I have a feeling they'd learn some colorful language during the disassembly... Those things generally don't just pop out. After that, I think they'd be good to come watch and learn. The DIY alignment should be quite entertaining also

Try one of these. I don't even think twice about popping them out and it's nice to the boot.

Let me revise my previous reaction: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

OHHHHHHHH that is going to be funnnnn! Those suckers are HEAVY. Check your passenger side drag link end at the same time. Those tend to develop play. Normally when we do the passenger tie rod end, we end up having to do the drag link end at the same time.

I just did the entire steering setup on the 99 F-250. Everything but the steering box! My tie rod connecting link was fused together  This truck is financially ruining me, but I love it :bananadead: :spending:
The alignment is pretty easy. Set your toe, then adjust the drag link to account for the steering wheel straightness, BUT I'm sure you knew that already.

Yep, doing the toe and go alignment and will adjust the drag link. I think i'm supposed to toe in .125"

I'm not planning on doing the drag bar end. The truck only has 60k miles and this was clearly caused by someone not tightening things properly last time it was aligned. If it was general wear and tear, i'd likely replace it all like you mentioned.

I need to find a video showing me how those retainer clips work, thats still not clear to me.

I heard from the vendor. As someone else noted, they wanted a picture of the package in order to process my request. My guess is that they need the information on the label to pass along to Amazon for a replacement to be sent.

I'll update on what they say.

@jpereira2 bone to pick with you. Cod and eggs? :puke: I know we Italians don't have a spotless record for foods but woof. First Portuguese dish I give a solid thumbs down to. Usually I'm on board.

The fact you have to ask is all you need to know.

Salted cod and hard-boiled eggs. :puke:
