    Why does that family have to rely on a Michigan hospital to care for their child? Why won't the "free" healthcare (sarcasm :rolleyes:) care for their son? I figured I'd ask a Canadian, eh?

    That kid is no longer capable of recovering and is in a vegetative state , the doctors in Canada seem to feel that allowing the child to pass is the most ethical treatment they can provide .

    The parents don't agree and are seeking an American hospital to provide a treatment that the Canadian doctors do not believe will help the child , except to prolong it's length of vegetative life .

    This case / question is not so much a Canadian healthcare system vs American healthcare system question , as it is an ethical question regarding the right to die , and ultimately the doctor's role in that decision .

    I'm sure these types of decisions are part of your pay system as well .

    And would an HMO perform procedures against a Doctors recommendations?
    They're just desperate. They already lost one child to a similar defect a few years back, have another child, and just want to bring this one home to die.
    If they want to pay for it themselves, fine, but its an expense with little benefit except to allow these parents to have their baby die at home.
    If the baby's life could be lengthened considerably, go for it. But its a stop-gap. I'm not paying for that.
    I'd hate to be the parent of a child who could be saved, but lost out because these parents had the hospital space needlessly occupied.
    Would you buy new tires just to drive a shit-box to the wrecker?
    Where's Darwin when you need him?

    Jeez, reading this over, I keep reminding myself I'm just being pragmatic, not cold.
