What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I'm thinking V6 Jeeps do it all the time though. Beadlocks will nearly always be heavier, with the added ring (Raceline ring is super thick / why I like them, better clamp) and all the bolts.

 

True. I was looking at racelines a while back, but was deterred by that part of them.
If I decide to go beadlocks down the line, I'll likely just have my current wheels sent into OMF to have rings welded on. Would still be lighter than 42 lbs.
The Racelines are meant to hold up in things like KOH races and other extreme use cases. I can't see myself needing that sort of strength out of a wheel anytime soon.

 

Stronger is always better.

Been following your build on Flickr, looking super clean! Glad you got your engine back in too. I've got the 12" shocks under the truck right now, hopefully get to mounting through the bed soon.

 

Yeah going to echo Zane's concerns that you won't clear the spindle or upper ball joint. Worth a shot. But I highly doubt it will clear with 35" tires. Maybe if the wheel clears and you're running 10.5" wide tires. But I wouldn't count on it. Buy one wheel to test fit first I guess haha

For me, sealing it was the best feeling.. Project completed haha. I used the flex seal paste. Got about 1/4” on the panels too. Been great so far too.

 

It feels complete now, I still have to cut the wings of my bumper and bash the front of the fender by the battery and airbox, but that wont take long. I wasn't sure what to use for sealing the panels but the local body place had tube of SEM Seam Sealer and it was super easy to lay down, push into cracks, and you can paint it before it is dry.

 

Ya, I'm a long way away from getting to the point where I'm looking to change wheels. At that point, it wont be 35s though, it'll be 37s.

The plan is to start piecing together the LT, and get the rear set up started. I'll probably run the LT without the spindles at first (with Tundra axles). Doing the entire front all at once is A LOT of money. I'll need to do it in steps.

I'll run 35s with the wheels I already have until the set up is completely done, then I'll go to 37s. Most likely 37x12.5 Patagonias (I'm really liking them)


As far as fitment of the wheels go. I'm pretty sure, by the time I get to that, I will have had an opportunity to check and see how they fit. Bobby/Solo Motorsports are pretty heavily involved in the Off Road community. I'm sure they either already have experience with that kind of backspacing or have access to a way to find out for me, given enough of a timeline.

Was just researching Tacoma SUA conversions (maybe the only big mod I'd like to do on this truck) and came across this. YMMV.

 

Appreciate the kind words man! I'm getting pretty excited for this phase of the build to be coming towards a close here shortly. Still a lot of work, but it's been fun!

I definitely recommend that if you have the time, and a wide enough rear axle, go relocate the shocks on the outside of the frame. Better stability off road is always a plus in my book.
