I noticed lower mpg with a headwind vs a tailwind on a 30-mph steady wind day on a round-trip drive here in northwest Indiana.

The on-board computations can be optimistic. My 07 Tacoma doesn't have that feature so it is hand calculations only. But I've had others with it. My F150 has never been off by more than 1/2 mpg in the 100,000 miles I've driven it. That is close enough for me and I rarely check it by hand anymore. I've driven other vehicles that were off by 3-4 mpg.

30mpg just doesn't seem right, but if you were to calculate by hand 27 mpg wouldn't surprise me under those conditions. I've made multiple trips to and through the mountain west and I always get a little better fuel mileage in the mountains. On the interstate my truck will average 19-20 mpg as long as I keep it under 70. It is wind resistance that kills the fuel mileage. On one trip I drove in a steady headwind from Denver to Kansas City and only got 16 mpg.

But in those mountains, especially on 2 lane roads, you aren't going to be driving 70. And while you may burn more fuel going up, you'll more than make up for it on those long downhill runs. There are places where you can drive 30 miles and rarely if ever have to touch the accelerator. I've gotten close to 23 mpg on that type of road.

flat ground under 50 mph and i can get 28 mpg pretty regularly. starts dropping a ton though once you get up to freeway speeds and mountains.

Is there any evidence that calculating fuel economy by hand is any more accurate than that reported by the head unit? Yes gas mileage varies a lot per various factors and can be rather volatile if averaged over a short distance, but I don’t know of any concrete evidence that the head unit is reporting less accurate results if averaged over the same distance, time, or amount of fuel.

In any case, I’ve never seen more than 24 mpg with a SR5 DCSB V6 driven ~350 miles at 70-80 mph at ~800 ft elevation. I surmise the lower density air at higher altitudes could lead to better fuel economy with modern engines capable of adjusting the fuel/air mixture, but I’ve personally never tried myself. 30 mpg still seems like an outlier though.

My truck cant calculate mpg or milea per tank, i use a scan gauge 2. The truck always says i have 256 miles per tank, i actually have 300. The SC2 and the gas pump both agree, the truck is incorrect.

I think the miles until empty is intentionally conservative to prevent you from running out of gas. On the other hand I have no reason to believe the mpg indicator is inaccurate.

2017 comp is pretty accurate, within 0.5 mpg vs hand calculated. I kept records of mine fill ups till 2020

I’m just skeptical that your mpg could be 30% higher than the published estimated hiway mpg of 23. Have you compared it to a hand calculation?

Sorry to burst your bubble. Looks like you used approximately 20 gallons of gas. 400miles/20 is 20mpg.

    Yes.

Using the trip meter divided by how many gallons it actually took to refill your tank is more accurate than the dash.

    Hope this helps.
