Towing with a zero offset

I recently bought some 16/8 rims with a zero offset for my 2022 Taco SR. Ive looked through these threads and havent found anything that spoke directly to this question.

I know Tacomas come with a stock 25 offset. Ive also ready that going negative on offset was potentially bad for your bearings and axle.

If i have new rims with a zero offset, will that impact my towing and payload capabilities? Ive read that big negative offsets may impact your truck's load ratings, but not sure if going from 25 to zero offset was enough to cause concern.

Will my rim change impact the payload of my truck, thus forcing me to take more concern to my tongue weight of my camper than if it were still stock 25 offset?

I apologize in advance if this has been answered and i missed it. Hopefully my questions is clear also. This is my first real truck and first year of towing a camper, so im still trying to learn the ins and outs of how modifying my taco will impact things.

 

Since the non TRD Pro wheels running an offset in the +25 area and the TRD Pro's running a +4 offset have the same wheel bearing, my guess is you are over thinking this and will be fine.

Where did you read the article about negative offsets?

They are correct technically but not practically. Sure, run some of big neg offset and of course your wheel bearings will have a higher load and poof your wheel bearings have reduced life.
Same for hauling a high payload. If you have two stock trucks, one with a thousand lbs in the back and the other one empty and they drove like that for years the one with the load will wear out his wheel bearings faster.
You have an intermittent short term load. You are moving the cl of the wheel very slightly.

There are hundreds of people here running -10mm wheels from SCS and other makers. If anything, the slightly wider stance provides some stability during towing. I never towed more than 3500 pounds but it was fine.

 

Tbh having a wider stance should make the load more stable, especially if you go wider. The only issue with what you said in the OP pertains to the extra stress the steering components can be under when turning. Should be more than okay on a solid axle setup. Just make sure the wheels/tires you choose have a proper load rating to support whatever you are going to be towing.

Seems like about half the country is doing a terrific job of not thinking at all -- a little overthinking is the better way to be.

 

You're right- oops. Pros are +4 as mentioned tho. I'm sure OP will be fine regardless.

 

Yup. But he specified OR. Offset is one of the ways Toyota markets the Pro to look tougher.
