Draining Fuel from Tank

My 2007 Taco has 197,000+ miles on it so it was time to trade it in. The new Taco arrived unexpectedly at the dealer's yesterday - right after I filled the gas tank in my 2007. The sales rep said the 2007 would go straight to the auction, so I feel no qualms about leaving it with minimal gas in the tank. I couldn't figure out how to get the fuel pump to turn on and pump gas into my gas cans, so I connected a cheap Harbor Freight pump to the fuel line as seen in the photos below. The 'guard /cover' on the rapid connect clip had me fooled for awhile. I spent an inordinate amount of time removing about 7 gal of gas and would like to remove a little more. Is there an easier way? I am aware that some advise removing the bed and going straight to the fuel tank, but the bolts to to the bed are pretty well stuck so that would be more effort than the crude siphoning method. Again, is there a way to get the pump to do the work?

 

You can pull the COPN relay and jump pins 3 and 5 together to run the pump in the tank.

 

Just ask for an extra $50 you cheap bastard. Why risk burning up the fuel pump for the next guy??

 

How much did the gas can and that pump cost?

 

I had one of those pumps, they do SUCK. Slow, whad it take about 100 pumps to get a gallon? The ends pop off. Someone wanted to borrow it, I told him to keep it.

 

Jump the fuel pump relay and grab the supply where you did from the tank, easy peasy.

 

Now I know the guy who cleans out the leave a penny/take a penny jar.

 

Brutal, I’d under stand if things were tight but you’re buying a new truck lol.

 

I've had the hand pump for years. I use it to drain my lawn equipment at the end of the season. Currently about $6.50 at Harbor Freight. The gas can came from a yard sale. I typically only had to pay $5 for gas cans in the past, but old ones like that without the stupid EPA approved nozzles are in demand now.

That's what the internet would suggest too, but I couldn't make it work on mine. There are two relays labeled EFI and each has 4 pins. I tried jumping each pair (one at a time) in both relays and couldn't make mine work. Somewhere on the net I read that it can't be done on Tacos because of some other sensor or circuit, but I can't find that thread again. My recollection was that whoever said that said the "ECU" prevented jumping it with a paper clip method from working, whatever the ECU is - and I can't confirm that that's even true. I was hoping someone here had done it.

 

It was already explained in this thread. There is another relay you have to trigger.

 

I suppose if I ran the tank completely dry I could burn up the fuel pump, but I'm not sure why asking the pump to draw the tank down to 1/4 full would do that.

 

1) Figure out where the pump lines terminate at the first junction (usually a connector under the driver seat or under cab on driver side).

2) Disconnect the metal terminal tabs for those wires from the plastic connector using a tiny flat head screwdriver.

3) Unhook and remove battery from the hood.

4) Connect these wires directly to the battery so power is supplied directly to fuel pump with no intermediary.

5) Think about if you're in such financial straits where this a good use of your time. It could be. I don't know your financial standing.

 

It is labeled COPN relay on Toyota's, jump the 2 larger pins (3 & 5) together with the key on to run the pump.

 

The C/OPN was one of the two relays I tried although I had called it an EFI relay. The 10A fuse immediately next to it is the one for the fuel pump and I can hear a click somewhere when I pull and insert that fuse. I thought I had tried jumping both pairs of pins (separately, not both at the same time) but maybe I forgot to try the other pair. I looked on the relay and the socket for the pin ID but there isn't any. Which ones are 3 and 5 - the pair of pins at the top of the "T" or the pair in the stem of the "T"?

 

I absolutely hate them. I’ve never seen one that actually works correctly. I don’t understand how spilling gas on the ground is better than a little gas fumes.

 

Thanks DM93. Pins 3 & 5 are the ones in the stem of the T in both the C/OPN and EFI relays for those looking at this thread in the future. It's dark out so I won't try it any more tonight but I will tomorrow afternoon. I'll start with jumping the 3/5 combo on the C/OPN Circuit Opening Relay first. If that doesn't work, I'll also jump the 3/5 on the EFI - Fuel Pump relay and see if both need to be jumped. Surprisingly I couldn't find this information on how to drain a Taco tank elsewhere on the net despite this generation of Taco being around for over 15 years. Nobody else seems to have described how to drain the tank on Tacos using the fuel pump. Thanks to all who contributed to the knowledge base.
