Draining Fuel from Tank

If you had a V6 all you would need to do is unplug the fuel pump resistor and apply power to the Black/Red wire but the 4cyl doesn't use the resistor.

 

HOw about a drill pump?

 

Remember you have to have the key on or the EFI relay will not be energized and there will be no power at the COPN relay.

 

It's very difficult to pull fuel through the factory pump no matter what kind of pump you are using, you may get a slight trickle but that's about it.

 

Although I'm working outdoors, I'd be a little concerned about the sparks from the drill motor. The risk is probably low however. The pump in the truck is already there and it seems like that's what people who own vehicles from other manufacturers are doing to drain fuel tanks since you can't get inside the filler neck to siphon gas any more.

 

Yup. I had the key on. I was following the procedure I saw in a couple of videos on youtube. They're all similar, but none of the ones I found were dealing with a 2nd gen Tacoma.

 

I mean instead of all this you could just bite the bullet on the gas and move on?

 

At this point I have enough out of the tank that I wouldn't feel too bad if I don't take any more out, but I'm curious if it is possible to use the fuel pump to remove fuel from the tank on Tacomas like it is on other brands and what I may have done wrong when I tried to do it. I'll follow DM93's suggestions tomorrow to see if I can make it work just for the proof of concept at this point. Someone else will make use of the information in the future and I will have learned something.

 

I know it can be done, I do it fairly often on vehicles with easily accessed fuel pump relays to empty the tank when replacing fuel pumps if they will still run at all.
Only difference is I use dedicated relay tools instead of shoving a pin or wire in the slot.

Crimp a male spade connector to a 2ft piece of wire. touch one end to the positive of the battery and take the spade connector and For a:

• V6 truck - pull the fuel pump relay - supply 12v to pin 4 of the socket
• i4 truck - pull the cpon relay - supply 12v to pin 3 of the socket

The fuel pump will turn on and start flowing fuel.

Literally as simple as that.

 

Years ago I took a truck out for a test drive and while sitting in traffic, I noticed the fuel light was on and the needle was below E.
I was few miles from the dealership when the truck started to sputter but I made it into a parking lot and then the truck shut off.
Called the dealership to tell them where the truck was and had my wife come pick me up. I would have bought that truck but I'm really glad I didn't because somebody that cheap most likely neglected the truck over the years and replaced parts with whatever cheap Chinese junk they could find.

Yup. Depending on where you are, all that work is costing you time to save ~65$. I say, take it to a straight stretch of road and do some 0-60 tests until you used up what's left in the tank and then turn it in.

Why stop at gas?

Take the floor mats out.
Remove the spare tire
Take the spare tire toolkit
remove the cabin air filter
drain the windshield washer fluid
take all the headlight, turn, and running light bulbs out and trade it in during the daytime.

All that effort and you don't even suggest that he takes the airbags for spares? smh if you're gonna do something, do it right!

 

Not any more. I forget what year the government mandated it, but all fillers now have a valve in them to prevent the fuel from draining out of the tank in a rollover and that blocks the siphon tube.

 

For proof of concept I just wanted to verify that jumping pins 3&5 on the C-OPN relay works. The fuel pump activated and fuel started flowing. The 20A EFI fuse is the one that controls the pump and I used that as my under the hood switch. The procedure is remove C-OPN relay and jump pins 3&5 [the stem of the 'T'], remove 20A EFI fuse, turn on ignition. Put fuse back in and fuel pump is activated. It took a few seconds until I started to see the fuel coming up in the hose. Photo below. You can see a few bubbles in the tube.
