    I'm not buying this.

A checking account returns shit, a savings account returns slightly less than shit.

I can't figure how you think you would have 20k more by essentially putting your money under a mattress.

Wanna laugh even more. For a very brief point today GTii was worth TWICE as much as BBIG. I've still got a bunch of warrants so there's that. lol

i agree…I was once a believer in this but I think the best of both worlds is “time WITH the market”…a man could have a 30 years in the market but what if on that 30th year a 40% crash happens? Your 20 year old day trading self would call your self stupid for staying in. And I say Time WITH the market cuz most people don’t really spend much time researching financials, reading up on catalysts (even projected ones like interest rate hikes), just learning and knowing how different derivatives and markets work. Whether you’re day trading or in for the long haul the more time you spend with the market —-you’ll be more successful. But don’t take me too serious you’re talking to guy that took a 40k paycut to work less and focus more on day trading——-yes I regret it lol

I don’t have my spreadsheet anymore but I could rebuild it. A key difference is that my employers never had a 401k match. So no free money.

If you calculate 30 years in SPY, with average returns which happens after it’s smoothed out over that time period, your money doubles about every 10 years. So if you start with $100,000 and don’t add any more, you’re looking at $800,000 after 30 years. I don’t doubt traders could beat that, but I’d bet the majority of them don’t. That’s the time “in” the market thing, doubling over and over is what creates real wealth.

Not saying that doesn’t create wealth..but from my personal experience my wealth grew faster when I actually dug into the markets started paying attention to different catalysts and different markets (real estate for me), hated economics as a kid but sure as hell love it now. Doing more research on stocks and knowing there are greater opportunities than the spy can easily front load that time IN the market — you can easily take on a set it and forget it strategy but for people like me I just don’t understand why people wanna work 40 hour weeks for 40 years to get 40% of their pay-check. I really think “time in the market over timing the market” is just some slogan MM’s bank on so they have more money to “time the market with”

You might be right and I take the opposite approach, if I don’t beat SPY I don’t care. I only invest for dividends and if I get 5% per year I consider that a win. I guess everyone has different goals.

Very true, but anyone in stocks should have accepted a 50%+ risk going in. It’s just whether you’re willing to accept a 99% loss trading, and I guess I’m not. I’ll live vicariously through you all.

When I trade options it's always an all or nothing play. Like I've said many times before. As long as you win more then you lose you'll make money. lol

o_O what....what funds are you in!?

Just consider this - from 2008 to today YTD, if you had dumped 100k in VTI in 2008 - today: 360k, with an average of about 9.5% annualized returns.

I don't know what funds you are in, but that's the issue. Not the markets and whatnot. VTI/VTSAX is a .03% expense ratio. Open a roth with Vanguard and dump it into VTSAX.

    https://investor.vanguard.com/client-benefits/account-fees

If you’re the primary account owner, you can eliminate the fee on brokerage accounts by signing up for e-delivery of statements and the annual privacy policy notice; confirmations; reports, prospectuses, and proxy materials; and notices, amendments, and other important account updates. In addition, Vanguard Brokerage Services does not charge the fee to clients who have an organization or a trust account registered under an employee identification number (EIN) or brokerage accounts enrolled in an advisory program serviced by an affiliate of Vanguard.

    https://www.portfoliovisualizer.com...me3=Portfolio+3&symbol1=VTI&allocation1_1=100

Go down a little bit on this page (coincidence, I just googled and VG was the first to come up!)

    https://investor.vanguard.com/investor-resources-education/retirement/savings-when-to-start

It shows the strength of starting early with whatever you can get.

Long of the short, if you start at 25 and end at 40, you'll outdo someone who starts at 35 and goes until they retire. Early early early for retirement!

Real Gs start at 25 and just never stop.

The realest Gs are born into the family that owns the trademark on sunlight, and theoretical limits on spending are just kind of an ephemeral thought experiment.
