My door check on my passenger side access cab door is making all sorts of noise. when i open the door all the way there seems to be some play in between the metal and plastic bushings inside the mechanism. when i'm driving down the road there is a constant clicking noise that I've found to be coming from the door check. it's frickin annoying and i need to fix it before it drives me insane.

anyone else have this issue? did lubricant fix it?

edit: if you don't know what a door check is it's the thing that prevents the door from opening too wide. here is a random google picture for reference:

Both doors of my access cab have a ticking noise, more so when the outside temperature is colder. The noise is just behind my left shoulder, and I can press down on the driver side access door and stop it from ticking.

It sounds like it is coming from behind the door panel and not the door check as shown in your photo. I have tried tightening the screw that holds the handle in place, shoving foam and cardboard between the panel and window, and nothing has fixed it.

I have been meaning to remove the access door panels and see if I can fix it. It drives me nuts and now that the cooler weather has arrived, I am noticing it more again. If you search you can find others that are having a similar noise.

I do not trust the dealer to take care of this and I plan to also install sound reducing material while I have the door panels off. I hope to have time next month to look into this further.

mine actually sounds like it's coming from the intersection between the rear trim panel, door, and rear glass but I isolated the sound to the door check. and you are right about cooler weather, mine seems to act up when the temperature drops a bit.

I had this issue on my tC. Same door check. Lube did not fix it. About $100 to replace. Swapped it out and no more noise. Should be covered under warranty if you have a 21 though.

yea, i did some research and a lot of people are saying lubing/greasing didn't fix it and they had to replace it. which is crazy since this truck is pretty new and this is the access door I use the least.

Yeah it's something internally on the check. It makes sense when you have it your hand but hard to describe if you can't see/hold it. Dealer should make it right though. Pretty simple swap, 3 10mm bolts. Have to take the door panel off though.

I'm beginning to think you could basically take this truck apart with a 10mm socket and a rachet handle.

Same. I am pretty sure it has something to do with the door panel and clips. I pulled my panel and the rattle stopped. But I can’t seem to figure it out and I got tired of driving around without a door panel. It was nice and quiet, though. Holler if you solve it.

i lubed the hell out of it yesterday and it did absolutely nothing to the noise.

there is a spring and ball bearing that seems to rattle around on the door check (door side inside the panel). I need to remove the panels to see if i can see what's going on in there. some heavy grease should keep it from rattling but you can't really get it in the proper place without removing the entire panel.

well, even after lubing it the sound has gotten a lot worse. i made an appt for the dealer on Friday so hopefully they can just replace the door check or open up the panel and see why it's making so much noise.

also noticed pulling on the door pocket there is some play in the interior door panel.

noise is driving me insane while driving so i sure hope they can fix it.

i plan to look into this further at the end of the week and i am fairly confident i will have it solved. i'll post an update.

i've had my door panels off and believe i know what the issue is. there was nothing behind or inside the door that was obviously loose and moving. i snugged the various bolts/screws for the speaker, latch mechanism, etc. but that isn't the issue.

my issue is not with the door check. if i press on the access door panel near the handle i can make the clicking noise that i hear when i am driving. it sounds like plastic on plastic or plastic on metal. my access door panels are very flimsy near the handle, the driver's side is worse than the passenger side.

i believe putting gorilla tape or similar over the metal bracket for the door handle as well as the various plastic protrusions on the back of the door panel, and some sound deadening material mainly as filler to prevent the panel from moving so much, will solve the clicking noise.

My door panels on this truck have been rattley too, but that rattle sounds nothing like what I have experienced with a noisy door check (popping when it hits the different ridges in the check). The door panel vibration was annoying though. I ripped off the factory foam from the back of the doors and replaced it with some medium-thick felt tape. That + some butyl deadener on some of the points on the back of the door panel where different materials come together got rid of my panel rattle completely.

All good suggestions to try. I've tried a lot of things without lasting success. I am able to isolate my rattle to the top corner of my access cab door panel. When I've pulled my panel, the rattle has gone away completely. Obviously I'm looking for a solution where I can keep my panel on. :)

Here's my latest attempt, and it's been working for nearly a week, so I'm cautiously optimistic, though nothing would surprise me any longer with this. I placed a thin piece of felt tape, even with the backing still on (it won't slide down further), between the upper right corner of the door panel and the metal door. I've tried felt tape near here before, but never thought I'd need to slide the felt all the way over between the panel and the rubber part at the top corner. This has silenced by door rattle for several days. I don't know if it just adds a little space so the plastic panel isn't contacting the door or if it's been that rubber piece making the noise all along. Either way, if you can isolate your rattle to the top corner on your access cab door, this might be worth trying.

Just curious if you have an update from the dealer?

I removed the access door panels and placed some gorilla tape over the metal supports for the door handle, along the metal edge of the window opening, and also over the metal supports at the top.

My noise was a clicking sound that appears to have been caused by the backside of the plastic door panel contacting the metal supports (for the handle and at the top) as well as the edge of window opening.

The clicking noise was louder and more consistent when it was colder outside and when I would drive on a gravel road. I would press on the area around the door handle and see the plastic panel flex and hear the clicking noise.

Too early to tell but I hope I got this resolved. It was very annoying.

I've been chasing this exact rattle on my access cab. Tried isolation foam and other stuff with no luck. Will give felt tape a try. It's not a loud rattle but with the radio off I can just hear it.
I think Toyota skimped on sound insulation to cover up all the rattles.

Yesterday when I was working on this, I noticed the seat belt tensioner inside the access door makes a lot of noise when closing the door. I suspect it may also rattle when driving. My driver side is much noisier than the passenger side.

I looked at it and there doesn't seem to be anything that can be done to solve it. I placed a piece of sound deadening material on the backside of the panel where it lines up with the tensioner, hoping this reduces that noise somewhat.

I've posted before this is one, if not the worst, built vehicle I've owned. I enjoy driving it, I think, but I can already tell I will be glad when it is time to get rid of it.

took it to the dealer and they said he could hear the noise but it was very intermittent so they couldn't pinpoint it. i actually figured out where the noise is coming from. the trim on the door seems to be rubbing against the trim on the cab. I will try and get a pic later and highlight the problem area.

they seemed to ignore the door check. still creaks and moans.

Good luck. This felt tape placement seems to have done the trick for me. I’d tried felt tape before but never over the rubber part at the top corner. I always figured the rubber piece would act as insulation. For the record, I cut a piece long enough to run across/under most of the top of the panel. Hopefully the pics show it. Hope you can solve it!
