That’s a $160 eBay special Gt45. I have so much money in parts that I couldn’t swing an s475 initially. I will be switching as soon as I get the new motor built in a few months.

If that is a journal bearing version, pull it apart and make sure there are no shavings in the center cartridge, if you haven't done that already.

 

I was thinking Fastnal may have some but I didn’t see anything. You could always get a couple of mandrel bent generic fleaBay kits and chop saw what you need.

It is. I planned on giving it a look over to just compare to other cartridges I have seen but didn’t think about shavings. I’ll do it today and let you know. Thanks for the heads up.

plumbing supply houses have sched 10/40 but not 16g. I can’t use eBay material for exhaust stuff cause there is so much work in it and need it to be strong. I’m using eBay aluminum for the IC piping for sure though!

 

What are the symptoms of not running a restrictor fitting on a journal bearing turbo?

 

Blue smoke? Possibly oil in intake mani.

 

Looks like it was a few issues. I thought the -4 oil adapter had a restrictor in it, it does not. Second issue, I needed to rotate the oil feed and drain closer to 12 and 6 o’clock. I don’t think it was draining correctly and oil was seeping past the seals into the exhaust. I corrected that and ordered a .065 restrictor for the feed line. Fingers crossed that fixes the smoke show I had earlier ha ha.

 

Shouldn't need a restrictor as long as your drain line is free or do you have a ball bearing turbo? Chamfer your drain flange similar to this. Never understood why the turbo is a square hole and a majority of flanges are round.

Did you ever adjust you pcv setup? That's critical in letting the turbo drain.

 

I have a journal bearing turbo. I'm going to try it with out the restrictor and see how it fares. I saw the motion raceworks videos. That is how I figured out my issue with the oil in and outlet orientations. I did adjust my PCV hoses before this occurred.

 

What size oil drain fittings are you using? Also, which brand? Answers to this may actually be the root cause.

 

10AN for the drain back to the pan. If this doesn't work, I'm going to have to rework that and at least upsize to 12AN.
I wish I would have seen the Motion Raceworks videos sooner rather than yesterday.

 

Just because it's 10AN, doesn't mean it's actually 10AN all the way through.

I was watching a Boosted Lifestyle YouTube video. The guy was having a smoking problem from his turbo. He was using some cheap no-name Amazon AN fittings. Come to find out, his "-12 AN" was more like a -10 AN by internal measurements. He compared the cheap fittings to the nice fittings. Lesson learned for him.
