Well, yeah. Especially if there's a company match - no reason NOT to get the "free" money from the company!

    Dear lord

I started around 25. Wasn't making much but still contributed enough to get the match. Company I work for now matches 5%, I contribute 10% to my Roth 401k. Took a huge hit recently but I look at it as opportunity to lower my cost basis. Had to stop for a while a few years ago, needed the money at the time.

My job also has a cash balance pension plan that they contribute 100% to. After only 3yrs I've got a good amount in there, so that's pretty neat. I don't expect social security to be around when I retire.

If I nail this stock market thing I'd like to retire at 50

@koditten I pulled all my info back together and I was off by $10K in my original statement (I was complaining so I took a little liberty of exaggeration).

Contribution history: In 2008-2013 I only contributed what I could I was making $35K/year. I contributed on average $1200/year (info from my tax returns). 2014-2016 did not contribute because put all my money into getting debt free (I paid off all my student loans and paid off my 2014 Tacoma) and open stock play with about $10k (got about 15% ROI). 2017 I contributed 15% of my income and since I have contributed the maximum allowable including hitting that mark on the 15th of this month at $20,500 invested, still all ROTH without company contributions.
    • $6,000 - 2008-2013
    • $0,000 - 2014-2016 [played open stock market game with $10k came out of those years with $11.5 in open stock funds]
    • $17,191.26 - 2017
    • $18,500 - 2018
    • $19,000 - 2019
    • $19,500 - 2020
    • $20,000 - 2021
    • $20,500 - 2022
    • Total out of pocket contributions of $120,691.26. Current balances of $110,756 :bananadead:

You know what the funny thing is my MIL was putting money into my kids 529 at $500/ month and she said that my kids accounts are worth less than she contributed this year by thousands! I want to tell her to keep contributing because the market is low so buy cheap shares but man its tough to see your accounts keep getting lower when you continue to contribute. :lalala::goingcrazy:

You were just using artistic licence to make a point.

Good on you to know where every penny of you money has gone over the years.

Most people don't know what they spent last week.

SS will be around, but the benefit characteristics may be quite different from what we see today.

I am kind of anal about money because I have had to work for it. I hate debt and work my ass off. I spend money now that I have some but I still keep track of every single purchase in an accounting sheet.

Do you know what you're invested in? Funds/ticker symbols?

OOF. My in laws did that in 08. Kablooie, and then pulled out retirement

That was back then, now my sister in law (their daughter) is....I don't know her position, but she works in retirement accounts/managing investment accounts (I think only retirement though). She wouldn't let that happen, and to their credit, they would ask her first. This was back in the 08 though.

I don't. Not gonna lie, I use mint and track my open budgets. I also have closed budgets. I don't know if there are industry names for those (rotating, solid, whatever).

    Basically:
    Insurance 125$/mo
    Cell plan 75$/mo
    .....

These are "closed", they aren't changing.

    Groceries 600$/mo
    ...

Whatever else, oh well you get groceries. That's "Open", since it can vary month to month. I keep track of budgets and spending habits using mint. So I know "Oh hey, this month my grocery budget is 200$ under, going into the last week. Guess who's getting ribs!" or "Oh hey, groceries is only 40$ under, maaaaaybe let's do some pasta"

This is what Murphy's law actually is. Given an infinite number of cycles, "what can go wrong, will go wrong".

That said, I'm a little sick of being in my third "once in a lifetime" market kablooie.

Well put. I should clarify by saying I'm not banking on it for supplementary living expenses. I expect that my 401k and cash balance pension plan should be sufficient by then.

Go back to my other post with the portfolio backtester in there.

    Your funds are killing you.

This one was one that my old company liked.

    https://www.blackrock.com/us/individual/products/282489/lifepath-index-2060-class-k/

    upload_2022-9-23_11-14-45.jpg

    upload_2022-9-23_11-15-20.jpg

But either way to be down net from 2008, your funds are junk. From 2008 to today, VTI (which is basically just an S&P500 fund with extra hot sauce) has been annualized +9.4% or +9.5% returns (it was in that link with the backtester I sent). Plus the ERs are probably significant, verses SPY or VTSAX, which is .02 .03 or so.

Most likely. Given the structure of SS and demographics in the US, it will almost certainly see limitations either in the firm of reduced benefits or exclusion criteria (i.e. means testing).

True. I'll check out blackrock too. I really screwed myself by taking those big gain years 2014-2016 off from investment to pay off $45k in debt from student loans and a truck BUT I also don't have any loans or car payments... I am diversified with IRAs, II and EE Bonds as well as with a lot of money invested in real estate. With at least 18 years left, I would love to retire around 55 without having to take any money out from my 401ks, we have passive income on our rental properties of about $500/ month currently and expect that to grow. We should be entirely debt free again in 10-12 years only debt is our personal mortgage, and that is when college comes for the kids (2). :goingcrazy:

I am also getting older and don't want to do all the manual labor anymore, I would like to be able to pay for larger project to be completed with my supervision instead of my supervision and manual labor.
