So exactly how is this best done?

My ‘17 TRD OffRoad DCSB (Auto) with new 5.29s installed, running on 32” tires falls on it’s face now at 80 mph; this almost got me wiped out a few times while trying to pass slow semis yesterday. Need to hit at least 90 for those passing moments. Sucks because it could go 100+ stock gears, same tires. Truck has no other mods.

There is so much info in 214 pages.

Why would you put 5.29s on a virtually stock Tacoma? Unless you’re planning to mod it even further?

I regeared first before hitting some other mods. I was already taking on weight with bumpers, winch, skids, rack, tent, etc. I later moved to 33’s, and now I’ve done CMR so I’ll probably go to 35’s next time I buy tires, but I did ask earlier in these pages before I did it if doing gears first was counter-intuitive and nobody said it was…

Cuz it can’t tow very well stock on hills.
Spoke with Nitro and several other Taco shops. All advised going to 5.29 for towing @4500 lbs and being able to maintain somewhat decent speed. 40-50 vs 25

I regeared to 5.29s while still on 33s knowing I was going to 35s as soon as I could find the tires I wanted. Even then I thought it was overgeared with my armor on. Then again I’m relatively light with no camper or RTT.

With 33s, myself and half tank of gas I weighed the truck at 5080 lbs. I found myself in 6th gear at like 36 mph lol.

Just got my gears done with REM polish and the shop said I didn't have to change out the diff oil. Another shop quoted me work and included a 1,000 mile diff fluid change even with REM polish.

I know the safe bet is to change it out - but any other opinions? I'm at 22.5k miles - I know the 30k service changes diff fluids as well I wonder if I can wait 8k more miles......

Also just adding some fun stats. 34's and heavy - pre gears 11mpg average with standard KDMax, avoided hills like the plague. After gears 14mpg average but sporadic cause of shift points, same KDMax, but felt like it didn't know when to shift/not fun experience. After gears, after specific 5.29 KDMax tune - 14.5/15mpg, almost every trip - smooth as butter, can't even feel like I'm on a hill anymore, rpms are so much lower.

These gears are worth every penny.

I'd change it. Gear oil isn't that expensive.

Do it at either 500 or 1000 with excellent quality oil and you can wait til 60k to do it again

Just get it in the squeeze bag, pumping it from bottles is like pumping maple syrup.

Set those bottles in the sun and that oil thins out a good bit.

The teeth on 5.29s are thinner than oem 3.91. I was wondering if anyone had issues breaking them.

I haven't seen a single report of broken teeth on TW.
