Here's the hard way. It does show how to measure spring. You can also just place the crown against the wall and mark the wall and ceiling side. Then measure the distances from the corner. A 45 spring angle will be the same number to each mark. A 38 SA will have a longer number on the wall side. A 52 SA will have a higher number on the wall side.




Here's the easy way. Doing it this way you only have to worry about the miter angle.

Are the corner pieces centered on the 90° of the wall?

 

The videos that have been linked are very helpful but it comes down to getting the crown cut upside down and backwards on your miter saw. Its helpful if you have a taller fence so you can lay the piece of crown upside down like it would be positioned on your wall (but right side up). I find this tool invaluable when marking the flat side of the wall. Lastly, this bad boy is helpful for finding the angle of the wall since rarely will you find a perfect 90" corner edge. I hope that helps you point you in the right direction.

Edit: Also, you should confirm that your miter saw's properly calibrated. You'll want to make sure that your miter saw is giving you true 90* and true 45* cuts and that your gauge will return to those marks every time.

Kreg makes a jig that Lowe’s carries. Its less than $30 and includes a corner miter gauge. You’ve probably spent more than $30 with incorrect cuts, so go get you the jig, read the directions and you’ll be good to go.

 

Confirmed the spring angle of 45*, measures 3-1/4 inches on the ceiling and the wall.

 

Have you thought about trying to build it on the ground out of scrap wood, until you figure out your angles?

 

I hate trim work on rounded corners. The base board corners really suck. They are only like an inch wide and the saw sometimes throws them out the back before the blade stops and I can grab it.

I think my errors were 2 fold:

I was trying to copy carpenters that literally didn’t do anything correctly. The reason that I couldn’t copy what they did was because they probably were not cutting at 22.5 degrees.

I was cutting face down when I should be cutting to mimic the spring angle. I bought a guard for my dewalt so that I can get flat faces on the ceiling and wall portions if that makes sense.

How long did you wait before putting things back on the deck?

 

I forgot to follow up on this, but good news at least, I was out at the store getting some misc fittings for a just in case fix if things went sideways when the bush got pulled. When I came back the bush was gone! Haha I guess the landscapers next door were loading up the backhoe and just came over and scooped it right now and I didn't have ol' yellowstone shooting outta the ground. I did some leak tests in the area and moved a couple drip emitters and we seem good to go.
I guess I was being overly cautious about it, and in this case 'just grip it and rip it' worked out fine.
Ironically I'm about a 6-8 weeks out from having to blow out the system for winter anyways.

Mentioned in my last post about wet bar install... that snowballed a little into this:



Not sure if there is a limit on pictures or not but here another big old dump of ongoing basement renovation. Was just a empty drywalled basement prior to the start. Building around the foundation block was pretty challenging to design around. Our lot view was a big priority as well so decided to try my hand at a "seamless" window bar.

Fwiw I am not an expert at any of this, just trying to save money by doing it myself and really find it rewarding. Had some builders come look at framework and some other details prior to starting and tell me what is appropriate, other than that just figuring it out as I go.

Pour in place concrete countertops, polished / acid stained concrete floor (very dirty in some pics), acacia live edge bar, Brick is repurposed from our fireplace tearout upstairs, entertainment center top is our old pool table slate.

Still quite a bit of finishing stuff especially with entertainment center but getting real close now.

Wow, nice looking job and that view is excellent.

 

Finally got the porch finish. The rest is going to wait until next year.





The yard is still a mess.

 

Easy one today. Switched out two crappy 22 y/o builder grade bathroom sinks and faucets.

 

Now to do something about this...

Yes, that is carpet. In the bathroom.

 

That so needs to go.
