So, kinda just coming on here to vent lol…I just “finished” replacing my rear axle seals, bearings, and brakes. The shop I had press my bearings put the left bearing onto the right axle, and the left onto right…I thought little of this when I was installing them and just put the left abs sensor on the right and right on left as that was the only difference. However I didn’t realize how the abs sensor works…now it thinks that I’m going backwards and as soon as I hit 60mph the abs, traction, chck engine, and brake lights came on on the dash. I also lost speedometer. I’m gonna contact the shop on Monday and tell them what they did. Also my parking brake cable seems loose and doesn’t engage the brake very firmly. Any tips on this? Haha kinda long sorry. Some pics for your enjoyment

yes the pulses backwards are different than the pulses forwards, the axle shafts aren't side specific, so you're going to have to get the shop to put new bearings on the correct sides. Hopefully they eat the cost.

yeah, hope so too, they cost me a whole afternoon and parts as well. I hope they can do a bit more for me than just repressing the bearings but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ask for a discount or partial refund on whatever they charged you to do the original job as well. If I recall, the bearings are about $120 a pop. I know they won't reimburse you for your time but you can ask for the max and see what they give ya. Next time DIY, I made a thread a while back and doing the press work isn't much more work over replacement.

Yeah, I'll ask them. It was about $300 to get them pressed total plus the lock collars, split rings, and bearings that I provided. Thanks, I'll check it out. I was wanting to not deal with pressing the bearings cause it seemed kinda complicated, but part of me wishes I had just done it anyways.

Will pressing the new bearings back off the axles to swap them, be kind of hard on the bearing?
When removing, they'll likely press against the outer race. When installing, they just push on the inner race so removing the bearing is actually kind of hard on it if I'm not mistaken.

That’s why you need NEW bearing. Don’t reuse the old ones.
So, yes. You are correct. It’s hard on the bearing pulling it off.
A lot of guys cut it off and make life easier.

But they’re brand new bearings…u saying I need the shop to get new bearings and not just swap them?

What happens is, the matched inner race to the bearing, stays on the axle shaft, and because it sits flush on the axle, it usually needs to be destroyed.

On top on the force removing it against the bearing rather than the race.

Every wrong side bearing I've seen installed has to be tossed

    oooooooooooor

Flip the sensor and tap a new hole.

thought abt that, but everything in me says not to plus I don’t got the equipment for it and I’d need something to fill the old hole. Also just kinda want it done right lol

It will be so hard on it that it will be not worth saving. Buy new is the answer, the unit bearings are a "one time install" item.

It is a shame because the older trucks like land cruisers and even my 1 ton sterling rear axle in the ford, you can take out the bearings and lubricate and inspect for wear. These unit bearings while cheaper to manufacture and easier to replace, just suck for inspections and determining the health of them.

All you need to do is drill and tap a hole for the sensor alignment 10mm bolt/stud it’s the opposite side of the sensor bolt. As why to Toyota doesn’t just put 2 bolt holes for the sensors there would be no need for a right and left side bearing

Seems like a lot more work to keep inventory on two items when that's the only difference LOL.

Worst case if they drill and tap a hole for you, you could put a cheap ass dorman sensor in the old spot just to keep it sealed up.

They responded by saying that they payed attention to the location and that they didn’t see a difference and told me to just switch sides…which definitely won’t work

Yeah not with the backing plates sandwiched between, they need to correct their mistake. Obviously they didn't pay enough attention if they didn't see a difference.
