Truck Came in and I Actually Like the Stock Suspension

Man o Man.

My truck came in last week, and I actually really like the kushy feel of the stock suspension. I know many of the people on the forum complain about how soft it is - it reminds me of the Jeep Grand Cherokee suspension though... which is a good thing

I've pre-bought a lift and am reluctant to have it installed. Liking the stock suspension and fearing for complications with warranty related issues if I go ahead with the lift. My tires go on this week - 265/75R16 wildpeaks (had them on my JK and love them)... If they fit okay, I'll likely flip the lift (eibach, icon leaf pack, ecgs bushing & taco lean spacer). Given the fact that many of these parts have higher than normal lead times, do you think I could get what I paid (can't return most of it) which was about $1500 ($1545 to be exact), or would I have to offer a discounted price on this forum's buy and sell? The 50 post requirement is busting my chops - I may have to list it on facebook instead. Let me know what you guys think...

The icon rear leaf pack you got…I assume that’s the multi-spring AAL, right? Not the full RXT pack?

I ask because I have the Icon 1.5” AAL on my SR5 (running a 2 inch spacer lift in the front) and just be warned that it won’t get your truck level with a 2.5” front lift, if that’s what you want.

I got about 1 inch of lift out of the Icon AAL (with the OEM overload spring out). So I bought a 1/2” spacer shim from headstrong offroad and that brought the truck back to level.

Just wanted to give you a heads up because I know some people (like myself) have fits if the truck has the Carolina squat.

Me personally, I really like the Toyo tires that came with my truck, and the stock suspension, wheels, steps, etc etc.

Please let me know if I'd need shims as well. I have a 2022 SR5 DCLB. This is the 3 Leave Progressive AAL kit.

This 3 Leaf Progressive Add a Leaf Kit comes complete with U-bolts and Center pins for an easy install. This add a leaf kit will give your Tacoma / Tundra 1.5" of lift after installation. Just remove the factory overload and say good bye to that rough factory ride.​

 

If you don't see yourself off roading or don't live anyplace where you have to traverse some tall obstacle the stock suspension is fine and underrated.

 

Yeah, that’s what I have. You could just leave the overload spring in when you install it. That should give you the 1.5” of lift that the website advertises.

I only removed it because I assumed the icon kit would give me 1.5” by itself but I was mistaken.

 

I 100% agree with this. I’m driving all over North America on my stock Hitachi’s. No crazy wheeling but some trails here and there; they work just fine and I don’t need to have a broverlander Instagram truck.

I’m gonna get my money’s worth out of them before I upgrade. New suspension will probably be my truck’s 100K mile present.

 

Also the cheapest most effect addition would be a better set of tires.

 

Lifts are more about looks than performance. But we won’t admit it to ourselves so we have to invent deficiencies in our vehicles to justify the purchase of new suspension.

Yep, very true. One of the first things I did was ditch the horrific 245 Toyo’s and get some Grabbers. It immediately drove like a different truck and I felt much more in control on the road.

 

I have wildpeaks going on this week. Ran them on my old JK and loved them.

 

My Land Cruiser is purpose built for rock crawling with long travel suspension etc. BUt the stock suspension is more than adequate and can handle 35's without a lift. That's all it needs. My 89 Toyota pickup 4cyl single cab just needed tire and I had no issues 4wheeling.

 

Same, love the stock suspension. My old truck I did the suspension three times, this one I am not touching it. Was thinking i might do it at 100K when it is clapped out, may just trade in for a 4th Gen instead. That thing should ride even better with the coil linked rear it supposedly is getting.

Liked the stock Firestones, those rode great plus returned decent mileage, but swapped them out over fear of getting easily punctured on all the FS roads I travel. Don’t need a blinged out BroLander since I save all the hard stuff for the dirt bike/mountain bike/hiking boots… just need a trailhead hauler.

 

My LC has that rear link suspension and my friend with a Tacoma can't understand how it rides better with chunky 35's than his street tired leaf suspension. A rear link is a game changer for the Tacoma in 2024. And much more able to be fine tuned than a leaf rear suspension.

 

I also am stock (2020, OR). I see all the cool lifts, wheels, etc. that members here have modded their trucks with, and definitely would love to do, also. However, as much as I wanna throw money at it, mine is pretty much a road queen, daily driver. So, I save my $$ for aesthetic mods, as I like the way my stock truck looks, rides and handles. I am itching to put bronze rims on at some point but will stay stock relative to size. I love the looks of most the lifted trucks on this site, members here do amazing work on their Taco's. It is fun to watch. the results of the efforts they go through..!!

 

Spoiler alert. The tires will fit ok. Its the stock size for a TRDOR.

I assume you'll cut me a good deal on all the suspension you're offloading.

 

If you don’t off-road , leave it for sure.

If you plan on lots of adventures the stock shocks will show their weaknesses. They get bouncy and soft.

I also like how stock drives, but I’m hard on my trucks. I only did a mild upgrade and they’re holding strong.

 

My Isuzu Trooper is linked, thing is like a road couch. Even more so with the captains chairs. Funny how things change as you age…looking for more comfort rather it looking cool.

Have been saying for years the Tacoma needs IRS or linked with a lot of resistance from the lifted crowd. I am like have you guys never heard of an 80 series Land Cruiser!?

Would nice if Toyota would open up the wheel wells to fit 33s stock, but oh well 32s are fine. Guess you could do 33s pizza cutters, only available in E-Rated so there goes the comfy ride.

 

265/75R16 will fit too, no problem. Even with stock splash guards.
