I just bought a new tacoma Sr and it's a base truck no tow package or cooler from factory, do I need an external trans cooler or just the radiator cooler fine? What is the running trans temp just normal driving without a cooler? Mine is the 2.7 with 6 speed automatic I don't have a way to monitor temps, also I am not towing anything just commuting to work etc.

Welcome to the forum :hattip:and congratulations on the new truck!

For normal driving the radiator cooler is just fine.

Nice truck, like the color. Red is tough to keep bright as the sun fades it. I picked black that shows everything, white has tended to have a flaking problem according to what I’ve read here. Anyways it’s a beauty gook luck with her.

Is the radiator cooler partitioned for atf cooling?
I thought when they eliminated the atf air cooler, they also eliminated the thermostat; so there's no control of when the atf is sent to the partitioned radiator cooler, or is it a constant supply to the partitioned radiator cooler? Coolant is supplied to the atf warmer when the atf is cool; don't know how that's controlled, if at all.
If there is no control, it seems the atf warmer and a partioned radiator cooler would be at odds when the atf is cool.

Yes radiator on mine has transmission lines going into radiator. Not sure about a warmer though.

I use a scangauge 3 to monitor my temps and numerous other things. My transmission temps average between 170-180 but will climb up to 190 on hills. In city driving my temps are lower but I don’t have a lot of stop and go traffic. I keep my transmission in S mode most of the time. S5 on the highway with ect for hills and S4 for low speed city driving. That will help keep your torque converter locked up and your trans temps down. Do a drain and fill on the transmission every 30k. It is an easy DIY with a scangauge. The 2.7l is an awesome motor and should bring you tons of trouble free miles. Pic of mine.

No transmission cooler needed if you are not regularly towing or hauling heavy loads. The stock L to L trans color in the radiator works fine otherwise.

So I'm assuming you have no external cooler just the radiator cooler I would be happy with those temperatures I guess, nice truck btw!

Toyota calls it a "cooler". On previous models with an air cooler, the thermostat is attached to the 'warmer'. AFAIK, you still have the 'warmer'.

These are diagrams from the AB60 transmission(Tundra)...

Do you have coolant lines running to your transmission?

I didn't see any just the two rubber hoses that go into the side of radiator.

Sounds like it's being warmed and cooled by the partioned radiator then.

Yes it does both I may end up adding an aftermarket cooler with a tow hitch, I didn't see a place for a ball to go in the bumper.
