believe it our not after the first 25k mile free maintenance I started to do it myself and I found the O-ring that was meant for the housing drain bolt, inside the housing. Toyota mechanic fucked up!

Absolutely worthless because it’s basically two oil changes. At least it’s free! I paid for the extended service on my wife’s BMW and it was only service when the computer said so. Literally had oil changes every 11k.

I had a good experience with toyotacare. Comes done to the person, or persons the dealership has whether their trained well. We've two awesome dealerships in my area when it comes to service.

I did my own oil change 3 weeks ago...I tried to use the 3/8 extension on the filter wrench...but instead was instructed to use the outer portion which is about a 36mm socket and a breaker bar. (I use the Auto Hobby Shop on Dover AFB and the service guy recommended the larger socket)

Using that little 3/8 inch extension and not getting it to budge frustrated me so much. Now I know to use a larger socket on the outer portion of the filter wrench and a breaker bar if more torque is needed.

This contraption helped with draining the filter housing.

You sure you didn’t piss-off a service advisor, salesman or tech at some point? Maybe there’s Loctite or JB Weld on the threads now too? (Wouldn’t be the first time)

Some good suggestions above but using an old serpentine belt slipped around the filter and then through the box end of a big wrench has always works for me. Good luck.

PS- a Fumoto Valve and a Jowett Performance aluminum oil filter housing are well worth the money IMO.....

Buddy had the same issue, hit it with the impact and it came off, replaced it with the metal one.

I broke the same housing on our rav4, bought it from a Land Rover dealership and they probably used an impact wrench to torque it. I had to use my own impact with the motivX tool to get it off. (ended up breaking the oil filter housing) Ended up replacing the housing with the aluminum one.

Like many of you, I hate the idea of someone working on my truck, especially the oil change 'technicians'. I took mine in for the 5K service and they would not change the oil (I changed it) until 10K. When I picked up my truck afterwards, the hand brake was pulled back where it was almost straight up and down - no need to yank on it that hard.

I am approaching the need for the 10K service but dread going to the dealer for this.

Two questions for anyone that may know:

    1. Regarding Toyota Care and the two free oil changes, does anyone know if the dealer will provide you just the oil and filter for free? I doubt it but thought I'd ask to see if anyone went this route.

    2. For the DIY'ers, how are you documenting the oil change so Toyota doesn't decline warranty if something happens in the future? I keep a written log and receipts of the materials I purchase.

Hope I'm not hijacking the thread.

I’ve heard yes to your first question but suspect it might be dealer specific.

For your second, keeping receipts is generally sufficient. Wouldn’t hurt to log it in your Toyota account if you’ve created one.

As far as documentation, you can self report ANY work done by using the Toyota app in the ‘service’ section. If you aren’t using the app, you can do the same self reporting in the ‘Toyota owners” section at the Toyota website online. It will chronologically populate any work you have done, along with dealer work from day one. It’s the easiest way to keep a record of everything done , all in one place. The work my Independent shop performed shows
    up as well.
