What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Clocked the full amount? Will be curious to see how it fits compared to mine.

 

Finally got around to putting together the shifter assembly. When I ordered a shift lever for the transfer case, I grabbed one which included the entire assembly off a 3rd Gen 4Runner. Initially was going to go with the black levers but decided to stick with my original Gray. I did use the sound proofing from the 4Runner boot - hot glue gun made short work of it. Also new shifter bushings even though the 20 yr old prerunner ones were fine - no crumbling at all.

Now that I have everything ready to go, action list as follow...

• Remove steering knuckles. Re-use lower ball joint boots and install manual hub knuckles along with new OE LBJs and new SPC upper ball joints
• Replace throttle cable on A340F and while the pan is removed, replace filter. Seal back up and call it good to install
• Remove A340E and install (lol) A340F, transfer case and rear drive shaft
• Install front diff, CVs and front drive shaft (saving front diff for last since I believe the torque converter bolts will have easier access with the diff off the truck)
• Wire up VSS and deal with the 4WD indicator light
• Alignment

Finally starting to come together. Now if the weather would not be in the mid to low 90s all would be good.

Thanks. Took quite a bit of time to track everything down but then again, I'm picky and the OCD kicked in.

Been procrastinating lately - trying to kick myself in the ass to just put it up on stands and start tearing into it. More tomorrow is the plan.

 

After seeing the amount of sheet metal work you had to do, I decided to install a 1” body lift. It’ll definitely be interesting to see how it fits

Replaced the throttle cable today in the A340F. Wasn't bad at all and didn't even have to remove the valve body, not sure why Toyota FSM says you do.
Was going to replace the strainer and what do I find - it's different than the one I had ordered! Ugh. Another difference between the taco and the T4R transmission.

Left is the 99' 4Runner A340F strainer (part# 35330-60020) and on the right is the taco strainer (part# 35330-60030). Kicking myself for not checking before.
Also, whoever worked on this thing used black RTV and did a shit job of it to boot. PITA to remove. That

pan removal tool did help quite a bit though. Glad I ordered it.

So now the trans is on hold until the correct strainer arrives this week. Going to start on the knuckles next.

Edit: worth noting, this A340F has only 4 magnets in the pan. I believe the taco A340F has 5. Odd.

 

Best I can do is $1500 and pull it in the garage to never have it leave again.

 

Priorities change. It literally just sits in the garage week after week.

Sell some of your lesser tacomas and you could afford this very capable rig.

Trying not to damage it since I'm not replacing it - not yet at least

 

You need to shock that center portion though and you won't do that with a dead blow

 

I should've went with it to begin with. Trusty 15+ year old rubber mallet did the job.
