    Morning y’all

Have a few questions for y’all:

    1. Those of you that have the URD LT headers installed; what did you do to minimize the additional heat the headers generate? Didn’t anticipate the extra heat they create and sitting on trails with the AC on, the factory cooling fan just doesn’t cut it, even with the oversized radiator. MASSIVE amounts of heat soak with these things. Everything in my coolant system is new, with the exception of the hoses (thermostat, water pump, radiator, fan clutch, etc…) I think my options are wrap the headers, ceramic coat them, and/or put louvers in the hood to allow air to come out? I’d even consider possibly putting my factory manifolds back on…

*EDIT - just realized these headers are ceramic coated from the manufacturer, so that removes that option… honestly don’t know if the performance gain of these is worth the additional impacts all the extra heat generated will have…hmmmmm…. Reinstalling factory manifolds would also probably mitigate issue #3…

    2. I’m considering a regear + a front locker. For those of y’all that are supercharged, regeared, heavy and offroad, how long did your rear end last after regearing? I’m on 35’s, fully armored, ~1000lbs in the bed. I’ve been apprehensive about regearing as it would make an already weak diff weaker (smaller pinion) and I’ve already gone through one diff (stupid line). When I talked to folks at ECGS, and I quote “a regeared diff in your setup will see a limited life on earth” lol. The route I want to go is a Dana 60 but $5.5k vs $700 (as far as ECGS goes). I know it’s largely dependent on driving style but just figured I’d see if they are blowing immediately or holding together for a while under a bit of abuse.

    3. My current exhaust setup has a ton of rasp from 2-3k RPM. I have the URD LT headers to a custom 3” setup from the headers back. I have a 3” vibrant ultra quiet resonator into a 3” RAM muffler. I don’t mind a little volume, although I’d like it to be as quiet as possible. Absolutely can’t stand the rasp though. I was thinking of swapping the muffler with a Walker quiet flow muffler but then have also had recommendations of adding a high flow cat or another resonator. Any suggestions?

    Pic of truck in question:

someone much more knowledgeable will probably come along to correct me but this is my understanding of headers....

The headers should flow better, so the exhaust heat isn't pushed back into the heads b/c there is less restriction. That means the motor should be running cooler but the ambient temps under the hood will be higher b/c of the thinner material headers and larger surface area of them. Before you start changing things, you need to set a base line and get are engine temps from headers and from manifolds and see which is better. Should be the headers. Then you could get some sort of heat extractor hood or louvers to relieve the underhood temps so it doesn't start to melt things.

But again, I'm very limited in my knowledge about these things.

Have you looked into an electric fan or electric fan conversion? These are pretty popular on track cars and install super easy.

Will move much more air at idle than OEM

My family is planning a trip to the Gatlinburg area for Christmas. Anyone know some decent wheeling spots near there? Nothing to crazy I'll most likely be the only truck.

since this is a temp vehicle, I wouldn't paint it. I would just run it like it is and then sell it separately when you sell the truck. It will cost you $300-500 to get it painted I bet. Probably not going to be able to recoup that cost in it unless you got it for free.

I think it could go either way on this one. Going factory colored black, it'll be an easy sell to someone with ANY color, because black looks fine mismatched on nearly any color. On the flipside, the current color is super common, so also would be a fairly easy resell. I say paint it if he got a good deal on it.

Or, check into the topper swapping threads, but probably have to do some traveling to get the "perfect" deal.

As a rule of thumb it is much more profitable to part things out then sell as a whole. So if you're parting it out, market is about the same for people looking for black or silver shells. By painting it you basically have a much greater sunk cost b/c it will sell for the same price in either color most likely. You just have to ask yourself if that sunk cost is worth it to you for a color matched sell in the small amount of time you will be driving this temporary vehicle.

Agreed, so really just all depends on how great of a deal he got on it to justify if paint match is worth the cost. I think some people may justify "overpaying" on the used market for a black shell vs silver though. For example, if I owned a Barcelona Red truck, I'd justify $800 for a black shell over $500 for a silver shell, just bc black would look better. All dependent on how much he paid for the shell, how much a repaint costs, and how long he actually intends to keep the vehicle. Very possible its not worth it.

Well if I'm paying $800 for a black shell for my red truck, then I'm just going to wait and pay $800 for a red shell for my red truck lol. But I get what you're saying and you're not wrong, black is easier to match to many other colors. But there are also a crap town of silver Tacoma's out there. The cost/worth of doing something is only valuable to the one spending the cash. You can't put a price on satisfaction so If it makes his time with this vehicle more pleasurable then it's worth it to him. I've seen and spent money are much less fruitful ventures also lol.
