The unusual shaped light bulb is a Westinghouse "Eye Saver", the shape is called T-19, the regular lamp we are familiar with is an A-19.

The T-19 shape was designed so that it permits a broader light distribution onto the lamp shades producing more light out of the lamps and makes light easier on the eyes.

Introduced by Westinghouse in 1958, discontinued by Phillips in 1997.

I've never torqued a drain plug in my life. :anonymous:

Pretty much everything I torque is for uniformity, like wheel lugs and heads, scope mounts and rings. I have a ½" drive for most stuff and a ¼" drive for scope mounts and rings. I guess I skipped ⅜"... o_O

Those are almost as expensive as the one I bought and I'd need two of them to cover the torque range.

The HF torque wrench would have been a more fiscally responsible purchase, but that damn Amazon is just so easy!

I wasn't so worried about the oil pan drain plug, it was more about the oil filter housing and the associated drain plug.

One of my all time favorites, a GMC F model commonly called "The Crackerbox" for a more or less obvious reason.

Built from 1959 to 68 the all aluminum cab Crackerbox was a truck built to address a specific issue - the length restrictions for trucks back then, especially in the eastern states. By making the tractor both as short and light as possible it allowed pulling a longer and heavier trailer -- that is where the money is after all.

With the single rear axle a wheel base short as 108" could be had -- remember last weeks 68 Camaro? It also has a 108" wheelbase.

Trucking companies of the day weren't really worried about driver comfort (or safety) and the 48" cab of the CB made that obvious, the model pictured is equipped with the optional luxurious sleeper, it offered 30" shoulder room on the passenger side and narrowed down to 22" on the driver side.

Below is the non sleeper version, note the truck on the left has a setback axle, a configuration popular with straight trucks like refuse packers, etc.
Notice also the engine popping out the back - for part 2.

The engine is the legendary 6-71 Detroit diesel, first introduced in 1938.
The 71 series can be immediately identified by the removable oval covers in the side of the block, the 53 series doesn't have them.

    $_1.jpg

Up to about 1970 the engines were branded "General Motors Diesel", in later years the company was renamed "Detroit Diesel".

Re-post from when Cory teased us about this truck:

The Detroits are 2 stroke diesels, since they fire every stroke of the piston they sound like they are turning twice as fast as a conventional 4 stroke engine thus the nickname Screaming Jimmy - Jimmy being slang for GMC.

The 2 stroke Detroit engines were quite revolutionary when introduced in 1938, a compact modular design using parts commonality across a variety of models based on a 71 cubic inch per cylinder displacement. 53 cubic inch models were introduced in 1957 along with V configuration engines. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 16 cylinder versions were produced.

These 2 strokes are all equipped with a supercharger (Roots blower) and have no intake valves, the cylinder liner has ports that are uncovered when the piston is at the bottom of the stroke, the supercharger forces in a fresh air charge while simultaneously scavenging the cylinder when the exhaust valves (2 on early engines or 4 on later ones) open.

Detroits also do not have a conventional high pressure injection pump. A low pressure pump provides fuel to individual unit injectors that are operated by the camshaft.

I needed a higher range torque wrench and bought a Tekton, I was stunned how nice it was for the price. Came with a nice blow molded case too.

    • My pneumatic gun was dying, so I bought this impact this summer. It was on sale, found out out afterwards that it's one of the strongest ones the torque chanel has ever tested... 16642115847553649542479831463079.jpgso I bought these to (hopefully) stop myself from breaking stuff
    • 16642117839801585644360761075565.jpg
Turns out the gun has high, medium and low torque settings and will shut off at whatever you set it to.

John Deere built 4,626 435 tractors in 1959-1960 with a 2-53 GM diesel, they scream as well.

    https://youtu.be/0sCLVdBGlBo

Oliver also had a GM diesel in the 990 made in the late 1950's.

    https://youtu.be/y9CcNs-6Les

    Massey Furgeson also had one.

    A bit more Detroit trivia:

6-71 engines can be configured in many ways to meet different design requirements.
They can rotate right or left, popularly used in twin marine applications and also be in a lay down configuration as used in busses.

If you grew up on the West coast you might have ridden to school in a Crown Super Coach powered by a mid mounted lay down 6-71 Detroit.
