2015 Tacoma AT 199k miles hard shift in first on occasion

I have a 2015 Tacoma with approximately 199,000 miles on it. I’ve never done anything to the transmission except recently I had the fluid drained and refilled. Since that time I have had during a rolling stop/start that it shifts really hard in to first. No other issues that I can tell shifts great down the highway or in town and if I come to a complete stop it shifts no problem. If however I come to a stop sign and roll it slams in to first? Anybody have any insight for me. Like I said I had the fluid drained pan droped magnet cleaned new fluid. I did not however get the transmission flushed as I figured that would mess up the valve body. Any help would be appreciated thanks!

 

Sounds like a low fluid issue.
Slamming into gear at a stop has been reported more than a few times. Low fluid was usually the issue.

Where did you have the fluid changed?

 

Christian brothers automotive. They were working on my AC and while they were at it I had them replace my main belt.

 

There is no dipstick to check the fluid level.
You have to let the fluid get to the right temperature, and then, and ONLY THEN, you have to pull the check plug on the pan. It’s a stupid setup that is totally unnecessary, and makes checking the fluid much more difficult.

I’d give the shop a call and ask them if they will check the level.
I’d also question how they check it too.

 

Ok I checked the fluid. I have zero fluid coming out of the overflow drain. I did it at temp and with truck running. How much do I put back in?? All I have is a quart on hand. Any help would be appreciative! I called the shop and they had no idea what I was talking about

 

drain the pan completely, then add 3.5 qts and do the proper temp check procedure. Extra will come out when at proper temp.

 

Mine got quite a bit better with lubegard, but I think my hard shifting is also maybe a messed up trans? If you're cruising at 36-40 and let off the throttle, is the shift so rough it shakes the truck forwards and back a good bit?(say, enough to spill a coffee 5-6ths full) Same issue also going into first.

Yeah that's what I mean when I said it was at temp. I had it in temp check mode by using a jumper on the OCD slot. By using that method it I said it was at temp. Anyways from what I drained off at put back in it looks like I was missing a little over a 1.5 quarts. Not sure if that makes a difference but a quick drive around town it feels considerably better. Ill take it out on the highway once I get off work.

 

Ok good deal. I missed where you mentioned that. Yeah 1.5 qts should make a big difference.

 

So drove it around in town and on the Highway with no issues. I tried to replicate the issue I had at least 5 or so times and couldn’t. I’m hoping this has fixed my issue.

with that being said could I expect any problems from this. I drove it around 300 miles with this issue.
