What does a watch communicate to you? (Need help on paper)

I have a research paper that I have to write about watches and their job at communicating time, and everything but time. What's your thought? Do you wear a watch? What do you wear your watch for, strictly to tell time, or to appear classy or sport or whatever...? (please clarify how you feel it makes you appear).

Do you think people today wear watches to tell time, with how easy it is to check the time on your phone?

I don't wear one. I use my phone for the time. If I didn't have a phone I would wear a watch. I would say generally people around 35 and younger only wear it for fashion. While 35 and up actually wear it for the time.

However, all recognize it as a piece of fashion. That's why people choose a watch that they like. So it looks good too.

 

watches can communicate power, status, fashion, luxury...

I wear a tide watch for ondemand tide reports when I could surf during the day, but dont really where it at night...

I also have a nicer looking silver watch that I wear when I get dressed up

I think watches are largely considered accessory items in todays smartphone world.

 

They say the watch makes the man.

I always feel more classy or dressed up when I'm wearing my watch.

I don't wear a watch anymore. I used to work with liquid nitrogen and it's not good to have anything that keeps it touching your skin. No jewelry, basically. A lot of machinists, mechanics and factory workers won't wear jewelry either, so you could infer a lower class by the lack of jewelry. Then again surgeons have to remove almost everything and scrub up too. If I had to have a watch now, I'd get some kind of pocket watch.

Cell phones are replacing watches for most people. Cell towers typically have very accurate clocks to synchronize data.

 

i use mine to tell time, i dont like having to pull my phone out to check the time.

 

I wear a watch 99% of the time. When I am out on the town, 80% are for looks and 20% for the time. When I am on duty, I use my G-Shock for checking heart rates and respirations.

 

I wear my 90% of the time. I use it to check for time primarily that is all it can do. It is a basic Omega. I wear it for its lineage, my father wore it for years and recieved it for a job well done in the field of work that I am currently employed in. It just reminds me of my dad and that hard work is always paid off in the end.

 

I wear my watch religiously, I feel naked without it. Like yesterday I forgot it going to work, I drove back to get it when I was 3/4 of the way there.

I use it for time, date, and a bit of style. Its just an old all black rubber coleman from target.

Not to mention I use it for work Prepping meds, injections, compounds, and pt dosing schedules so it hellos being able to look at my wrist and calculate times and rotations. Although working in the clean room is different since I can't wear it there.

Now, how do you guys wear it? Mine is worn with the face to the bottom of my wrist.

 

I use mine for time and vital signs.

I have two as well, one for work, a S&W black one, my dress one is a Bulova my wife bought me for Christmas a year or two ago (I picked it out). I love the fact it has a kinetic drive, so anytime I move it recharges the battery.
The work watch is just that. I wore it on the ambulance for vitals and to see how much longer I had to be on shift. Now that I teach coal miners, sometimes I'm underground, other times in the pit, other times in the classroom. This one can do it all. I have honestly beaten the crap out of it.

 

I only take off my watch when I shower, because I have a cloth/velcro band, and it feels gross when it gets wet.

I have just a cheap $30 Coleman watch, and I wear it strictly for time/date. I rarely even use the alarm on it anymore.

I carry my phone with me whenever I leave the house, but I find it a pain in the ass to have to pull it out just to check the time. It's much easier to just pull back my sleeve and look.

 

A watch communicates what type of person you are trying to appear to be
like (very stereotypical and more of example than anything else:
Rolex or Tag makes you look rich
Suunto makes you an outdoors or cross trainer (depending on style)
normal watch (like casio or what not) shows you want to know the time and you pick a watch that doesnt look horrible
Big bulky or style watches makes you who gives a crap, it looks good

or if all else fails, if you wear a watch in general, you need time time because of one a couple reasons:
you are in school (my old school installed cell jammer, bought watch because of this)
dont have/like cell phone
wear skinny jeans and it is easier to look at your wrist instead of try and pull your cell out of the pocket that makes it seem as though it was wrapped in duct tape

anyways, watches are watches, good or bad, so either way its a watch

 

HA.. that's the same fossil I bought in the mall in san antonio in 1998. The battery died in mine by 1999. 5 years my ass! Fossil does make some cute watches though. Decent for the price.

My watch says.. I have been on this wrist for a long time and this wrist apparently goes into "dangerous" places. Its a titanium citizen and its dinged up all to hell. Its awesome when you work in UTC but live in KILO and are looking at.. well anything but UTC to KILO.
But I can't find a replacement without just buying a new of the same. No watches can take me.

 

I wear a watch every day, and have done so only recently. Ever since I got a cell phone it had become unnecessary, but I always have felt the need to know what time it was.

It really gives me a sense of control over my daily life, because without knowing what time it is, I feel unable to plan accordingly. I know that many societies plan arrangements over a certain portion of the day, rather than a definite time. For example you would plan to meet at dawn, or midday, rather than 9am or noon like we would in the present in the US.

I have a pretty high resting heart rate (100-120 bpm), so I periodically check it throughout the day, and a watch with a second hand makes it easier than taking out my phone, and opening up the stopwatch.

Overall I think watches can be an essential efficiency tool if used properly.

The reason I went back to wearing a wristwatch is because my girlfriend bought me a slick looking fossil as a gift, and I found myself in activities where checking my wrist was way easier than taking out my cell - Swimming, Wrenching (dirty/oily hands), Dirt Biking/Motorcycling, Snowboarding (ever try taking your phone out with giant gloves?), etc.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm pretty utilitarian and carry a 2.5" partially serrated knife on me at all times. I feel pretty naked when I don't wear it mostly in situations when somebody needs a box or a package opened. Anybody else?

 

I wear a watch every day mostly because I would kill my phone if I kept it in my pocket while working. Usually wearing the rubber ones to work and the metal ones out and about. My g-shock is the most functional and the nixons are fashion/cool factor. it seems like more and more people wear watches for style since Ive caught a friend or 2 wearing them with dead batteries.

 

I wear a G shock, I use it for time/date because everything I do at work is time stamped time sensitive. Also because i work grave I work between dates too and i have to keep checking the date.

Now, if your wearing a Rolex, Its says your better than me, or your father never hugged you.

 

what about using a watch, sorry a real one, with a dial, and a stick and 15 minutes of your time to find out what direction north is...?

 

I got myself a citizens eco drive for work recently, thing is awesome. I had a g shock before and I felt it just didnt flow with my suit. I use the gshock on the weekend now when Im snowboarding, hiking, having sex, etc...

Im with the others on the point that reaching into my pocket to check the time is kind of a pain, in addition to being disrespectful to customers I have in front of me.
