I believe that was built when Husky was under the AYP umbrella (American Yard Products), it is a twin to some Craftsman models so parts should be no problem.

Should have the nice Kohler Command engine too, they are usually nice runners.

The one I have on the New Holland is a generous oil consumer I agree, runs nice though and has plenty of go.

Friend of mine said he’d help me put a clutch in my Ford 4630. I got the clutch today, now to find time.

I’ve never seen a pressure plate with splines. I guess it drives the shaft for the PTO pump in the trans to give me live PTO. That’ll be fun trying to line 2 sets of splines up to get it back together.

Friend has an older twin Kohler on a Terrimite Backhoe. Insist on running 5w20 in it and wonders why it smokes at idle...

Probably wouldn't hurt to use a heavy duty diesel 15w40. That's what I used in my older mowers. My newer Kohler twin gets Valvoline VR1 Synthetic 10w30 racing oil. It's wayyy overkill though

ill try that. coworker has 1 week to move, figured 75$ wouldnt be bad. not sure if an older hydro drive is an expensive mistake or a quality choice. he last used it 2 months ago and had a new battery this year. ill give it a go.

The Command engine has an oil pump, filter and hydraulic lifters, straight 30 grade is a poor choice especially with the coming cooler weather.

Kohler recommends 10W-30, I have used the Kohler branded oil in all my OPE with a filter. You can use a common WIX 51348 filter, easy to find, it fits many Chryslers.

Older hydros in lawn tractors are usually quite reliable, after all these years it isn't a bad idea to change the oil and filter if it has one (probably not), kind of a fussy job but not difficult or even expensive.

yes! definately that. i figured 100$ish in tune up costs to see what i have would be worth it.

As long as you aren't mowing huge amounts of land with some maintenance and care those older riders can give many years of service.

I have had lots of older riders (cheap) the number #1 problem is always the deck, #2 the steering. The actual engine and transmission are usually far more reliable.

    I agree.

Straight grade oils were designs to keep impurities in suspension. The idea was to remove contaminates with an oil drain.

Newer engines have filters to catch these particulates.

In addition, straight weight oils are more money or harder to find.

I do believe changing your oil is the best recipe for keeping your engine running as long as possible.

With that said, keeping the oil topped off is the cheapest.

I have a 1974 Kohler twin that has burned oil for 20 years. I check the oil every 6 hrs, add oil the next spring. It doesn't care.

We used to say if the tire goes flat in one day that’s when you fix the leak, otherwise just check on it daily. Same sort of thing.
