Just noticed white smoke puffing out occasionally. Mostly when coming to a stop after down gearing. A few weeks ago I gutted the cats but there was a loose clump of the platinum that I couldn't get out. Does it seem reasonable that the white smoke is just coming off of that sometimes? My coolant level is good and oil looks good and the level isn't rising. Actually have to add a 1/2 quart or so every so often. Burning it somewhere somehow because I don't see any leaks under it

    Oh look, another mod....

White smoke from the exhaust is an indication of a coolant leak. Since it's sporadic, it could just be condensation burn off.

Thanks for the input. I'll take it for a good little ride and see if it clears out.

Yup, if is cool out and especially if the truck is parked outside, you will get some condensation burn off. You might keep an eye on your coolant though. I would also check the oil for contamination. I don’t know about the engine you have, but I had a 90 truck with a 22RE and those were prone to the timing chain grinding a hole in the cover at over 100K which caused a coolant leak which dumped into the oil pan. The first clue was a little white smoke. Hopefully, you’re all good.

You guys don't think there's a possibility that it could be just coming from the clump of loose platinum in there rattling around and all? That's what I'm hoping for lol.

White smoke is water and/or coolant being vaporized. Bluish-white is oil. You have something burning of there whether it’s condensation (hopefully), coolant, or oil. The platinum wouldn’t be the cause of that.

Since that piece was too large to get out, that means it's large enough to move around and plug your exhaust stream. If you have a big power loss someday, and find your tailpipe output at idle to be lower than normal, whack the cat, or loosen it on the front side and see if that fixes it.

    I’m betting it’s condensation/ steam.
It’s totally normal in colder weather.

    I agree with @Clearwater Bill
I do not think it is caused by the the loose piece in converter.

One possible explanation is that coolant is leaking into the cylinder(s) and getting burned with the combustion.

It may be a bad head ga$ket that will need to be replaced.

Even in socal, my exhaust puffs white-ish smoke for a good 15-20 min or so until the exhaust is fully heated up, but never noticed my coolant level dropping so I'd just watch for that

How many miles on the engine? You state you're adding oil and dont see it on the ground. That means you're burning it.

Also why did you gut the cats?? I seem to recall a guy on here who had to rebuild his 1GR-FE after having a piece of his cat semi plug the exhaust, and then having the engine ingest the platinum.. Cant find the thread right now
