If you're not looking at diving into the festool market, 3M recently released their ROS to the public. Its a beast and quite the contender. A few youtube personalities have put it through the ropes.

Interesting, it appears to look and work very much like my Festool sander. It is however more than $100 higher in price! $568.00

Hey folks, total wood working noob here. Looking for some recommendations on the best long term water & weather proofing for a project.

Currently building a box out of 3/8 ply and 1" pine to hold my RTT ladder as shown below. This is going to be mounted between the bed rack and RTT as shown. It will be a permanent fixture just like my RTT. As such it needs to withstand year round conditions from ice to water to winter road salt spray and even incidental pressure washing after an offroad camping trip. Id also like it to be black, or at the very least a dark color - out of sight out of mind type of thing.

Do you think simple exterior latex paint would work? Some sort of black stain? A buddy mentioned you can dye poly? Paint over poly? I know what I want but have no idea how to get there, so thanks for any suggestions :D

Coat it in Flex Seal, that's probably going to be your best bet.

Not sure of your materials here, but just be mindful to not have treated wood up against that aluminum (I assume) tent bottom. I second a couple thick layers of flex seal; might not technically be the "best", but should do the job and be a budget solution.

If he uses the liquid in the paint can, he can basically waterproof it.

@SR-71A you could also take it to your local Line-X place, that would also work well for waterproofing. Basically an indestructible shell.

Nothing is pressure treated, partly why Im overthinking the waterproofing aspect.

Forgot to mention I had decided against bed liner due to all the horror stories of frame rot after bedliner application - aka its not actually waterproof. You guys really think flexseal would do the job? Not against that idea, Ive just never worked with it. Suppose I could pick up a small can and see what its like.

Check into what guys who redeck their older aluminum boats do. Spar urethane base and paint seems to have gone a long way for most.

I am. And word on the street is that it does not stain well so I'm gonna let it sit overnight and see if I like it in the morning.

Not fancy woodworking but started on a project that anyone using Tanos/Festool systainers might find useful

I'm going to build some custom plywood inserts for some of my empty systainers . Downloaded a .dwg template file from a thread in the Festool Owners Group Forum and had my structural engineer print it for me.

Glued his paper copy to poster board to make it more rigid and just test fitted it

Next up I'll glue this template to 1/4" MDF or plywood for a permanent template

found the file in this thread for anyone interested

Tung Oil, Linseed Oil, Spar Varnish, or a Marine Grade oil based sealer. I would be concerned with using Flex Seal for the same reason I wouldn’t use Linex. You are ultimately just surrounding the wood with a waterproof product. If it doesn’t fully adhere moisture could get underneath and compromise the structure. The others actually are drawn into the wood creating a waterproof structure. Just my opinion though. Good luck.

I wonder, could you remake it out of a UV stable plastic? I know there are some UV resistant grades of Delrin.

i'd use a wood hardener and then dark stain such as ebony. Then once its cured put spar finish over that.

Or maybe use teak wood since its not that big of a project and less likely to rot as pine is softer and will rot easier.

Maybe. Not sure that would have the strength I need without using thicker material. Also cost

Seems like spar urethane paired with some sort of stain is the way to

Try this first. It will reduce the blotchiness. You can get it where you get your stain. Just follow the directions.

A little hint with spar; thin it out and apply multiple coats. If you don't, it can take forever to cure, especially if you are in a high humidity climate.
