What are the transmission temps that you're seeing @XPOTRPR?

I know that when my trans was going through the roof, my engine was there with it. It's still up there but way better than before. Its a fairly easy swap to go with a trans cooler. The fan is a bonus but it was nice in the desert was mashing around and helped bring the temp down.

not sure on Trans temps specifically. I need to set up torque to read Trans. Currently have it to just see engine temps. Highs were a little over 220 when I cranked the heat.

got ya. good to hear I suppose.

Are you experiencing these temps when wheeling or when cruising down the highway?

It's happened twice now within the last month.. First time was while climbing mountain passes fully loaded going camping. Started to notice engine temps climbing, checked torque and saw it rising.. killed the AC and cranked heat to get through. Cooled off once we started our descent. The second time was after driving around town (streets and freeway) and then getting stuck in a long In n Out line.. I noticed it again. The AC changed.. noticed that first.. then saw the engine temp creeping up again. I killed AC and cranked heat again until we started rolling.

your scenarios were exactly mine. climbing hills trans light came on. waiting in in n out a week later haha temps were 250+, then one more time down in Anza trans temp was sky high and engine went with it. Then added trans cooler and back to normalish. This was also with a CSF if it helps but trans cooler upgrade is def needed with the Auto if your are heavyish.

Good to hear. I have been pretty convinced the Trans was affecting the Engine temps due to it being overworked.. just makes sense too since it has been happening after adding all the weight.

The oem oil cooler, will impact coolant temperatures. Coupled with the transmission fluid also being cooled by the same coolant, the radiator coolant will take some of that load off. In hot climates, with engine loads, and transmission loads, the potential to tax the radiator becomes easier. Now, if your fluid in your OEM fan is gone, or not low, then the fan cannot work to original standards.

This is where having the external transmission cooler becomes very handy. You can make it as large as you need, and put a fan on it, like @nudavinci64 . Helping to take some of the load off of the engine. As well as keeping the Transmission fluid and coolant from every interacting in a worst case scenario. That should make it easier for the radiator to do its job, and keep everything else happy. Unless it is still being taxed too much and you need a better radiator and/or better fans.

Thanks Tor. That was laid out nicely, makes sense, and definitely reassures my thinking. I think I'll just commit to ordering the Rad and the HD Trans cooler from Mishimoto so everything is fresh and can handle the added loads, replace the Fan Clutch, and see if I can get anything else in there fan wise afterwards.

On the hot transmission fluid topic, @XPOTRPR and @nudavinci64 - have you tried dropping out of normal gear down one or two? I find that as soon as the torque converter unlocks on my not so heavy truck, my trans temps climb to above 215F easily if I leave it in normal crushing gear with overdrive. As soon as I downshift to 4th, the TC locks back up and temps start falling rapidly.

I have played with it.. dropping to 4th just gets me into such a high RPM (like 3K at 75) that I feel its too much. I was actually wondering when it was happening during the mountain passes if I should re-gear again from 4.56 to 4.88's to help compensate with going to 35s and the added weight.. but I'm not sure if that makes sense either.

..maybe I just need to come to terms that I'm not a light little truck anymore and stop trying to go 75 still up passes.. I'll be one of those guys tucked between an old Dodge pulling a camp trailer and Semi going uphills now.. slow lane... here.. I come.. :pout:

Well, don’t give up until you start gathering data. Set up torque (or better logging with Hp Tuners) and we’ll be able to help more on if a bigger trans cooler, or something else would mediate.

In terms of overheating my experience has been AC not working when in drive throughs and the engine + trans temp getting hot in the same situations. I upgraded to the fj csf rad and that seemed to help a little bit with keeping engine temps down, but it would still get hot and my ac performance still wasn’t great. I got the efan setup and now as long as the fan is going (coolant up to temp) my ac works great, and my engine also seems to stay much cooler. Trans is still getting hot so I plan on getting a bigger trans cooler installed soon. I think the only time my motor started getting hot with the efan was climbing the road up to cerro gordo, but the trans was heating up a lot which I know influences the engine temp in the current setup.

My end goal with my setup is to have the transmission cooling isolated from the engine cooling system all together, and then get a better fan controller so that the fan will kick on if I turn the ac on even if the coolant isn’t hot yet.

There are things you can look do to help with the temps. Hose off the radiator to clean it, paint it black, revise tune to not be as hot, better supercharger coolant pump if on stock one, make sure there is no air in it, larger sc pulley, lose some skids or drill some speed holes in them, pusher fan, stack washer on hood hinges, make sure there is little as possible to block air inlet into and out of the radiator. Just ideas.

For sure. That's something I've been really bad at and been meaning to do. Get some more logging done in HP Tuners.

I think I'm going to do the Rad, HD Trans cooler with efan, and then see if I can fit another small efan in there like @Torspd recommended for the A/C condenser. I's also like to keep my mech fan.
