I have a tuned AT 2022 2x4 Tacoma sport double cab. With K02 285/70R/17 KMC wheels, Possibly add a prinsu roof rack and call it good as far as the mods go.

It’s my daily driver, I live and work in Southern California and won’t be towing anything more than my Mountain bikes.
Will 4.88 or 5.29 be best for maximizing mpg?

Based on the lack of additional weight and 33's, I'd recommend 4.88's.

Also, as for your statement "call it good as far as the mods go"... we've all heard that before. You'd better close your TW account if you intend to stick to that.

Edit: BTW, I have 5.29's with my 33's and considerably more weight. I'm what I'd consider "borderline over geared"

There are some highly reputable installers that have pointed out why the 5.29 is the preferred gearing.

I used to have 285/70 paired with 4.88’s.

It was better, but during that time period of the install 5.29’s wasn’t offered…

I read somewhere the difference at 60 (could’ve been 65) mph was 700rpm

In the long run I wish I went with 5.29s. I mean, we do have 6 gears - your highway rpm won’t be screaming, but probably, more useable.

I like my 4.88’s. At 70mph it’s about 400rpm more than stock. With 32’s 255/75/17) it tows my 3500lb trailer and gear just fine. 5.29’s would have their place while towing, but not for daily. Being tuned helps alot.

Realistically are you going to keep the truck long enough to make it worth the cost?

32.8” tires aren’t much bigger than stock.

I drove my 16’ 4-Banger on 35’s for a bit and it wasn’t that unbearable.

    I get it.
    But I’m also tuned…and on 35s.

I knew one day I’d jump to 35s…but what I’m saying is there was no talk about 5.29s when I did my gearing.

If OP tunes, 4.88s and stays on 33s..I still think he’ll want more lol

I wish I would have went with 5.29’s but they weren’t available when I did my gearing. 4.88’s are okay with my 38’s. One day if I ever have another 2500 bucks laying around I’ll probably switch.

With that said I’d go 4.88’s if you are planning on staying that tire size. 5.29 is too low IMO.

How about a 4.56 setup, would they maximize mileage? For my setup.
I checked out a few gear ratio calculator and they range between 4.56 and 4.88 for my setup

with 35’s, 5.29’s makes total sense. That is a much larger and heavier tire

4.56 doesn’t exist for 3rd Gen. Might as well go 4.88 because the difference is trivial
